What is Draft-Legal Racing?
Draft-legal racing means that you are allowed to ride close to other competitors in order to shelter from the wind. This is known as drafting.
If you watch any professional cycling races or elite World Triathlon Championship Series races you will have seen athletes riding in groups and drafting off each other. Draft-legal racing provides an added element of fun, excitement and tactics. Most age-group races are non-drafting but the race track at East Fortune provides the perfect opportunity to experience draft-legal racing.
Are There Different Rules?
The majority of normal duathlon rules remain the same. The main differences relate to the type of bike you are allowed to ride (see below). Importantly, you are not allowed to draft off athletes of another gender or athletes on a different lap.
We would recommend familiarising yourself with the British Triathlon Competition Rules.
What Equipment Do I Need?
You will need a roadworthy bicycle with traditional drop style handlebars and brake levers. Importantly, you are not allowed to use time trial bikes or any form of clip-on aero bars. Wheels must have a minimum of 12 spokes, and therefore disc wheels are not allowed.
How Do I Practice?
It is important that before you take part in a draft-legal race you are comfortable riding close to other riders in a group. We would suggest taking part in group rides with your local triathlon or cycling club as the first place to start.
Please note that East Fortune airfield is private property and we are very grateful to be allowed its use for our event. This means that unfortunately you will not be able to recce the run or bike routes before the day of the event. Please do not try to access East Fortune airfield other than on the day of the Duathlon.
What If This Is My First Race?
If this is your first race...welcome! It's great to have new faces along to our events and we hope you'll be hooked on the sport for a long-time to come. You'll receive a friendly welcome and there will be plenty of volunteers answer any questions on the day.
If you are new to cycling, or don't feel comfortable riding in a group, we would recommend putting yourself forward for our Novice wave which we will run if numbers allow. Also, the race track is 11m wide so there is plenty of space for everyone and you will be able to ride as close to or as far away from other competitors as you feel comfortable.
race mementos
We are conscious of the environmental impact of our event but also aware that you may want to celebrate your achievement of completing the East Fortune Duathlon with a race memento.
For that reason we will only offer a wooden Finisher's Medal if requested on your entry form. If you would prefer not to receive a medal we will instead donate the cost to our charity partner.
Similarly, Race T-Shirts will be available to purchase for those who wish at a cost of £20. The T-shirts are high quality with a unique and vibrant design.
You must enter on or before 26th February 2023 if you wish to request a Finisher's Medal or purchase a Race T-Shirt.
