Organiser's Description

The Bath & Bristol Railway Races follow the route of the original train line from Green Park Station in Bath to Bristol Temple Meads and this route is the flattest of all the races in our calendar! The route is 100% tarmac, offering a road race like experience through the green countryside and into the heart of Bristol. The trainline was in use from 1869 - 1971 and between 1979 and 1986, Sustrans converted the railway path into whatwould become the first route on the National Cycle Network.

Along the route you will find historic and active nods to the routes heritage. The Half Marathon runs out and back to Bitton Train Station, with 2.5km in each direction running alongside the Avon Valley Railway, an active heritage line that still runs on the original route today.

The 25km, Marathon and 50km run alongside the Avon Valley Railway station at Bitton and onwards to Bristol, passing restored signal boxes, picturesque stations at Warmley and Mangotsfield.

The 450m long Staple Hill Tunnel is on the route of the 25km, Marathon and 50km race. It is significantly larger than the tunnels at the Two Tunnels and Wye Valley Tunnel Run as the route had two railway lines running through the tunnel. The Staple Hill Tunnel is well lit.

Course Details

In keeping with the railway theme, we have named our events with this in mind. The 10km, Half Marathon, Marathon and 50km are all on out and back courses so are known as Return Tickets. The 25km is a point to point race, so is known as a Single Ticket.

10km - Kelston Park Return Ticket

Half Marathon - Bitton Station Return Ticket

25km - Bristol Temple Meads Single Ticket

Marathon - Eastville Return Ticket

50km - Bristol Temple Meads Return Ticket

The 25km event concludes in Bristol outside Bristol Temple Meads Train Station with medals and goodies awarded at the finish line and we will transport your bags to be this finish line so they will be there waiting for you. Therefore this race does not include a return journey back to Bath as many people will want to continue their travel back home.

If you do wish to catch the train back to Bath, it is super easy. You will need to book your own train ticket from Bristol Temple Meads to Bath Spa Train Station (15min train ride) and then walking the 900m from Bath Spa Train Station and back to Green Park where the race began, or onwards directly to where your bike or car is parked.

All our courses are very comprehensively marked and well marshalled so you can relax and enjoy your run. All the routes are essentially 100% tarmac, aside from a small amount on grass at the start and finish.

We have a 10km, Half Marathon, Marathon and 50km - all of which are on an out and back format. There is a point to point 25km which runs from Bath and finishes outside Bristol Temple Meads Train Station.

There is a 3.5hr cut off for runners to start the return leg of the marathon, targeting an overall finish time of 7.5hrs. There is a cut off of 4hrs for runners to start the return leg of the 50km, targeting an overall finish time of 8.5hours. There are no cut offs for the other distances, though please note the races are not open to pure walkers, but we always welcome people who will do a mix of run, jog and walk their way around our routes.

Please do not run with music players which have in ear headphones, only bone conducting headphones are permitted in line with UK Athletics rules who license these events. It is very important that you can hear the marshals instructions, be aware of other users in the tunnels (think cyclist's ringing their bells to come past you!) and traffic on the sections of the course that cross roads. Thank you!

All the races are are suitable for buggy runners but this event is not open to canicross runners.

Bath & Bristol Cycle Path of Conduct

Please read the Code of Conduct they have developed as we will be using it during our event, thank you!

All Users please

- Share the path so that everyone can enjoy it - the path will remain open to the public during the event.
- Keep to the left and please keep in single file where possible and unless overtaking
- Leave no litter - please leave empty cups or energy bars at the feed stations. If you can run with a full wrapper, you can run with an empty one :-)
- Respect the privacy of adjoining properties and landowners
- Be courteous and patient with other path users, particularly children. Please make yourself known if you are approaching another use in the tunnel
- Be aware that mobility scooters may use the path. Motor cycles and horses are prohibited

Walkers please

- Avoid spreading out across the width of the path
- Be aware that others may wish to overtake you

Cyclists please

- Control your speed: our shared use path is for sharing not speeding
- Be careful on downhill sections
- Take care when passing other users
- Slow down on narrow stretches or if you cannot see clearly ahead
- Be particularly careful at junctions or places where visibility may be poor
- Use a bell to let other users know that you are approaching
- Do not assume people can see or hear you approaching
- Use lights when visibility is poor

Dog Walkers please

- Keep dogs under control
- Keep dogs on a lead when using the tunnels
- Unfortunately runners are not able to take part with their dogs, but dogs are very welcome to spectate.
- Clear up after your dog
Important Notices

We are making use of public footpaths and not closing any roads. Therefore there are places were runners will have to cross potentially busy roads. All major crossing points have either Zebra or Pelican Crossings and will also be marshalled. The marshals do not have the power to stop the traffic. You must wait and make your own decision as to when to cross the road. You may have to wait a few seconds for a light to change so please be patient and take the opportunity to catch your breath. Anyone deemed to make an unsafe road crossing by one our marshals will be disqualified. Whilst this is a race, your safety is our highest priority and the same rules of the road apply during the race as at another time – do not put yourself or others runners at risk for the sake of a few seconds!

All paths used by the race are open to the general public, many of whom use the routes as their regular walking routes. Please make the event a success by being polite and courteous to the others users of these paths so that has a positive impact on everyone involved.

There is a cut off of 3.5hrs for Marathon runners to reach the marathon U turn point. There is a cut off of 4hrs for the 50km for runners to reach the 50km U turn point.

The weather was shocking but you can't really fault the organisers for that. It was otherwise a good race. The facilities were great, an excellent choice of route and I generally felt well supported. I would happily use Relish for other events in the future.

Really well organised, particularly in such challenging weather. The care after the event was great and such a lovely route. The route wasn't clear on the website.
