Centrally located in the iconic Princes Dock, our inaugural Urban X race will feature a knockout competition with up to 8km of racing around a thrilling 2-kilometre course, encompassing 2 swims totalling 400m and 3 runs totalling 1.6km.

Race day will feature a number of heats, quarter finals, semi-finals and a grand final as well as a family team event (parent and child).

Swimrun is a relatively new sport where you complete multiple run and swim stages along a route.

Participants will swim with their running shoes on and run in their wetsuits completing multiple transitions along the way. Unlike triathlon, no equipment can be left at transition points and swimrunners must start and finish in the same equipment.

Swimrun started as a bet between four Swedish friends who challenged each other on an island to island adventure along the Stockholm Archipelago. Their route was turned into a race course in 2006 and the first ever swimrun race was born (although it wasn’t called swimrun until later).

Swimrun is completed either as a team of two who typically have to stay within 10m of each other or as individuals. There is an increasing amount of specialist equipment for swimrun, such as swimrun wetsuits which allow you to run comfortably in them.

Swimrun courses follow three distinct distances: short, medium and long courses which roughly correlate to Super Sprint, Sprint & Full Distance disciplines. Athletes come from a broad range of backgrounds: triathlon, trail running & swimming the most common.

Typically, you will spend the same amount of time running and swimming. For example a 5km course might have 1km of swimming and 4km of running. The 1km swim could take you 20 minutes and the 4km run, 20 minutes. As swimrun courses are designed by the environment, standardisation of distances is near impossible. In our 5km example, a swimrun course might look something like:

Run 1: 1500m

Swim 1: 200m

Run 2: 3000m

Swim 2:600m

Run 3: 300m

Swim 3: 200m

Run 4: 200m

But there can be pretty much any combination of transitions and distances in a swimrun race.

We will be sending a full itinerary for the day, including the registration slot for your first heat of the day, to your email address by the end of August at the latest.

If you want to see all of the racing, and make the most of the whole day, you can go to the general registration will take place between 8:30am and 9:30am on the morning of the competition in the start/finish Fanzone area. Then you can relax until your first heat!

You may race a number of times throughout the day and, even if you are still in the competition, there will also be time to take part in the family team race.

Afternoon - 3 x quarter finals, 2 x semi finals and a grand final, followed by Presentations

There will be plenty of refreshments available and activities in the Fanzone as well as toilet facilities. And of course you'll be able to watch all of the races from wherever you are in the venue.

A wetsuit may become mandatory if the water temperature drops below 14C - we will let you know in advance

When Not Racing

Bring dry clothes, warm hat, a towel and/or a changing robe you can easily change in and out of between your races to stay warm.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to come along and support on the day, at no entry cost. Our event Fanzone will be serving up a variety of refreshments and entertainment right next to the action, along with hosting leading sports performance brands for you to meet.

On race day, the Family Team Race will be one of the highlights of the day with one parent and one child of 11 years & over making up a team of two, designed to help raise the next generation of Swimrunners!
