Course Details

FOOT PHASE A short undulating run on grass and a little pavement around the truffle field and chicken farm at Penllyn Estate will warm you up for the adventure ahead.

CYCLING PHASES The cycling is on hard and soft-packed trails. There will be some ascent and descent on small stoney tracks and grass, and if wet, it’s likely to be very muddy in places – It will be an adventure! There will be a small section of road.

KAYAKING PHASE The kayaking phase will be around four buoys in the lake. There will be plenty of water safety, and we will offer support and instruction if required. All kayaks and kayaking equipment is provided. For this event, the kayaking phase will be midway around the bike course, so we will have a small transition area for you to leave your bikes.

FOOT NAVIGATION PHASE Straight after the kayak, you will be given a map featuring five checkpoints. All you need to do is find them! If you choose to race competitively, there will be time penalties for any checkpoints not found. You will then get back onto your bike to finish off the rest of the course.

TIMINGS & RESULTS If you’d like to race competitively, you will be given a timing device to record your time. This is optional for those who would rather not race. CYCLING PHASES The cycling is on hard and soft-packed trails. There will be some ascent and descent on small stoney tracks and grass, and if wet, it’s likely to be very muddy in places – It will be an adventure! There will be a small section of road. HELMETS MUST BE WORN. One checkpoint will be at the top of the hill on the long course only. If you don’t own a bike, you must borrow one from a friend or hire one from one of our cycle partners. Details below.

You may want to carry some waterproof trousers in your bag for the kayaking phase, as you will get a wet bottom! Also, if you wear bike shoes, you may want to carry your trainers as the foot orienteering phase will also occur here.

FOOT NAVIGATION PHASE Straight after the kayak, you will be given a map featuring five checkpoints. All you need to do is find them! If you choose to race competitively, there will be time penalties for any checkpoints not found. You will then get back onto your bike to finish off the rest of the course. There will be a finish checkpoint at the end of the course.

bike hire

We have searched high and low for bike hire in the Vale of Glamorgan, but unfortunately, no such thing exists! Bikes can, however, be hired from Pedal Power in Cardiff or from Margam Park Adventure in Neath & Port Talbot. Both are happy for you to collect the night before. Please contact Pedal Power and Margam Park Adventure directly to make a booking. Pedal Power have excellent Isla and Frog bikes available for children and limited adult mountain bikes, and Margam Park have a variety of adult and children’s mountain bikes.

accommodation

There are log cabins available to rent with Cowbridge Cabins on Penllyn Estate.

Please contact them directly to make a booking.
