PHOENIX - Riverside Marathon & Half Marathon

Sat 30th November 2024

Three triangular medals with red and black designs hang on a wooden background. Each medal features a stylized flame and bird logo with the text "PHOENIX Running." The ribbons are red with "Phoenix Running" printed in white. A group of runners, smiling and jubilant, stands beneath a "Phoenix Running" tent, showcasing their medals. They are dressed in colorful athletic gear, some wearing tutus and vibrant accessories, with trees providing shade in the background. A group of people in athletic gear are gathered outside "The Weir" pub on a sunny day. Some are sitting at picnic tables, while others stand and chat. In the background, there are more people, trees, and parts of the pub building. The atmosphere is casual and lively. A large group of runners, both men and women, are starting a race on a tree-lined path. They are wearing athletic gear with visible bib numbers. The atmosphere is energetic as they begin their run in a marathon event. The sky is overcast, and trees can be seen in the background. A group of 17 runners pose together outdoors on a sunny day. They are wearing athletic gear, some with medals around their necks. Trees and a river are visible in the background, adding to the scenic setting. All the runners appear to be in high spirits.

Nice low-key friendly run. After the Athens marathon last week, this one was a complete contrast. Really low key, can't have been more than 160 runners, but it had such a friendly atmosphere amongst people who obviously run with Rphoenix runners on a regular basis. A simple out and back course of about 6.5 miles which is then run 4 times for the marathon distance. The route takes you along the banks of the River Thames so quite a pretty route, but once you've done it a couple of times the scenery gets a bit tired. We had a lovely crisp day to run, the towpath was flat and fairly dry all the way. Plenty of encouragement from fellow runners, there was a real feel of camaraderie. Well organised with an aid station either end of the route stocked with all sorts of yummy goodies. Also great to see they run a system where you use a refillable cup to avoid litter. Parking at the Xcel leisure centre was free and you could use showers afterwards. All in all a cracking run, will definitely lookout for more of their runs in the future.
