Something Wild Trail Running Festival

Hexworth, Yelverton, Devon

Organiser's Description

The Something Wild Trail Running Festival is a family friendly trail running event at Dartmoor National Park. It takes place at Huccaby Farm, nestled in a secluded valley and surrounded by the fabulous landscape of Dartmoor. A perfect little haven for trail runners and their families!

Our HQ for the event is the large and dry Cow Shed. That’s where you’ll find the caterers, tables and chairs, the registration area, a bouncy castle, the feedstation & finish line and the band that’s playing on Saturday evening.

A field has been set aside for parking adjacent to the cow shed, opposite the farm house. The campsite is just across the road by the river. And the Forest Inn Pub is less than 10 minutes walk up the hill.

We offer various races with fantastic routes for all levels: an ultra-marathon, a marathon, a half marathon, 5K and 10K races as well as kids races. We’ve rescheduled the races again this year to allow people to compete in the 10K on Sunday and one of the longer races on Saturday. We will be publishing the best aggregate times for the two events too. All courses include tough climbs, enjoyable downhills and, of course, Dartmoor’s best trails and views.

ULTRA - TOTAL CLIMB 1381M (4533 FEET)
The Summit Wild Ultra is a new addition to the Something Wild Trail Running Festival. It is the ideal distance for your first ultra – even though it is by no means an easy ultra. It starts alongside the marathon and incorporates the marathon circuit plus one lap of Sunday’s 10K route.

MARATHON - TOTAL CLIMB 1325 METRES (4347 FEET)
The trail marathon is our blue ribband event. Starting and finishing at the festival site at Huccaby, it crosses the fulcrum of Dartmoor where east and west rivers meet at Dartmeet and completes a circuit of Bellever woods via Yartor, Babeny and Sherwell Farm. From here you will head east along Dr Blackalls Drive, crossing the river for a second time at New Bridge following a bone jarring descent and heading in to Holne Woods, then on in to Hembury Woods, skirting the brook before ascending the steep climb up Pupers Hill via Scorriton.

HALF MARATHON - TOTAL CLIMB 754M (2544 FEET)
Make no mistake: This is a tough half marathon, but you will be well rewarded with some of the best views that Dartmoor has to offer. The route starts and ends at the festival site at Huccaby Farm, crossing the river at Dartmeet before climbing gradually to Sharp tor and along Dr Blackalls Drive to New Bridge, from where you will enter Holne Woods.

10 km - TOTAL CLIMB 324 METRES (1063 FEET)
The 10K, which is nearly all off road is the first event on Sunday morning. It is the ideal course for all level of runner. The route follows most of the initial loop of the marathon course, crossing the fulcrum of East and West Dart rivers before ascending towards Yartor, Babeny and Sherwell farm but does not go as far north as Bellever. You will return through Brimpts farm. From here it is a half mile sprint mainly down hill to the finish at Huccaby farm. The cut off time for this event is 2 hours.

5K TOTAL CLIMB 170 METRES (560 FEET)
The 5k will start alongside the 10k and split at the bridge at about the halfway point. You then follow a great path along the West bank of the Dart before rejoining the very end of the 10K route.

Saturday 1st August. 10.00am to 3pm

This will be led by Dartmoor’s Daughter Emma Cunis. Emma is a qualified guide, whose knowledge of Dartmoor, its legend and its nooks and crannies has made her a sought after sage on Dartmoor. Her randonnees include night chorus talks, navigation and wild flowers and folk tales. Emma will be leading a 10k walk Saturday morning leaving 10am from the cow shed. So if you have a spouse doing the race why not take your child along, if they aren’t at forest school.

Experience a Wild Walk with Dartmoor’s Daughter around the ancient tenements at the centre of Dartmoor. We will explore hidden hamlets, walk lush green driftways, discover an ancient stone row and tall standing stone, and enjoy stunning 360 degrees views. “We’ll pick ripe whortleberries along the way, and hear tales of local rogues, and understand why Laughter Tor is no laughing matter! This stunning walk is a offering at the ‘Something Wild Trail Running Festival’ 2020 following the 10K runners route.”
