The Bannister Series 2024

Sat 3rd August 2024

A runner with the number 41 on his bib triumphantly crosses the finish line, appearing exhausted yet victorious. Spectators and journalists, some holding cameras and notebooks, are gathered around to capture the historic moment. The setting appears to be an outdoor track. A red, four-lane running track beside a grassy field under a clear blue sky. In the background, a few individuals stroll along the track and buildings are visible. A small sign is placed on the grass near the track. An aerial view of an athletics track with a red running surface surrounding a green sports field. Nearby, there are multiple buildings, additional sports fields, and trees surrounding the area. Tennis courts are visible in the upper part of the image. A red running track curves around a grassy field with a game in progress. In the background, there is a modern, multi-tiered spectators' stand with a roof, seating, and a press box. Further back, houses and buildings are visible under a partly cloudy sky.

Organiser's Description

-- VENUE UPDATE --

Iffley Road have decided to relay the track when we were booked in, not great news, but we take the rough with the smooth. Rather than cancel we've found a new location down the road at Horspath Athletics Center. Same format, new facilities.

-------

Come and join us for a very special event this summer at a location steeped in history and achievement, and the backdrop of one of the greatest achievements in the history of running!

Welcome to Iffley Road, the running track where Sir Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile way back on the 6th May 1954. It’ll be the location of our new event, The Bannister Series. You’ll take on either a 6, 12 or 24-hour challenge to see how far you can run in your time frame. Does anyone want to also try for a 4-minute mile?!

How many laps can you manage in your set six or twelve-hour time frame? 400 Meters isn’t far, but those laps start to add up pretty quickly.

We will be running five events throughout the day, two six-hour runs, two 12 hours runs and a 24 hour run;

The Bannister 6 (AM) – Event time 9am until 3pm

The Bannister 6 (PM) – Event Time 10pm until 4am

The Bannister 12 (Day) – Event Time 9am until 9pm

The Bannister 12 (Night) – Event Time 12pm until 12am

The Bannister 24– Event Time 10am until 10am

Each lap is counted as exactly 400 meters long and it doesn’t matter if you run on the inside or the outside of the track, your final distance will be counted by how many laps you complete.

This means that you’ll need to have completed 106 laps for a marathon, 53 laps will be classed as a half marathon and 113 laps will be classed as an ultra. You can finish your event at any time within your chosen time span, and as long as you have completed one lap then you will be classed as a finisher.

Timing Monkey will be around for the full day to record everyone’s progress. You will be supplied with a timing chip at registration that will track the number of laps that you complete along with the time of each lap. The results will be available online throughout and after the event.
