THE DARTMOOR CROSSING & GREAT ESCAPE

Sat 9th August 2025

A black background features event titles in stylized fonts and varying colors. Top to bottom: "BIGDAYOUT" (light blue), "DARTMOOR" (blue), "THE CROSSING" (green), and "THE GREAT ESCAPE" (blue and red). A logo reads "The Crossing Dartmoor Ultramarathon" in green text. Surrounding the text is a minimalist compass rose, with the letters N, S, E, and W indicating cardinal directions and the intermediate points highlighted. A group of runners wearing race bibs gather at the starting line of an outdoor event on a cloudy day. They are dressed in athletic gear, including shorts, shirts, hats, and hydration packs. The surroundings include a grassy area, a house, and trees. A remote stone cottage with a slate roof sits between two evergreen trees on a vast, rugged moorland. The ground is covered in patches of grass and tufts of golden-brown heather. A stone wall with large rocks frames the foreground under a clear blue sky. A grassy field with numerous standing stones arranged in a circular formation. The sky is clear and blue with some clouds, and there is a forested area and hills in the background. A group of runners in athletic gear gather at the starting line of a race in a rural setting. Some participants stretch and chat while others prepare their gear. A tall green flag on the right and a building surrounded by trees can be seen in the background. A scenic landscape shows a vast, grassy field dotted with rocks under a partly cloudy sky. The field is bordered by clusters of trees and rolling hills in the background, creating a serene, expansive view of nature. Five runners, wearing athletic gear and race bibs, jubilantly cross the finish line of a trail running event, holding hands and smiling. They are surrounded by green grass, banners, and a few parked cars in the background. Three runners, wearing medals, stand together and smile after a race. They wear sports gear, including shorts, vests, and caps, and have race numbers 228, 1, and 118. Banners and green grass are visible in the background. Two men wearing running gear stand under a finish line archway with "Events" visible. They are sweaty, smiling, and have arms around each other's shoulders, each displaying a medal. Both give thumbs up, with green race bibs numbered 76 and 104 on their shorts. Five people in running gear stand together on a grassy field, their arms around each other, smiling after a race. This was my first ultra and I’m aged 59. I’ve seen videos of it in the heat, firm ground and beautiful views but keeping cool the challenge. Yesterday’s event however was a total bog-fest (till the old tin mining stoney Puffing Billy track), draining leg strength with every step, a white-out with visibility at 100 yards all day, constant drizzle. But it was glorious! Dartmoor is special in all weather. I’m definitely doing it again (even though I declared I’d never run again at the end)! Really well organised, flags at every 100 yards and a good GPS to download, lovely crew stuck out in the middle of nowhere at good aid stations and giving directions at tricky points along the way, great spirit of mutual support amongst the runners, lovely medal at the end and a pint of Jail Ale from the Dartmoor brewery available at the bar at the finish.
Really glad you enjoyed the event Mark! It was very Dartmoorish this year.. more like November than August! It’ll probably be baking hot next time..🤷 Hope we see you again! 🙂 The OuterEdge Team
