Two Tunnels Railway Races - Oct event image

Two Tunnels Railway Races - Oct

Brickfields Park, Bath

1A The Hollow, Bath BA2 1LX, UK

Sun 25th October 2020

5 races

£8.64 - £37.80

Organiser's Description

A truly special race that not only takes in many of Bath's beautiful attractions, but also has the longest underground section for each race distance in the UK!

Cutting right under the city of the Bath, the two tunnels offer a truly unique running experience. The Somerset & Dorset Railway closed in 1966 and until April 2013, the tunnels had been sealed and inaccessible. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Two Tunnels Group and Sustrans over a period of 7 years, the two tunnels now have a new lease of life as a shared use path. The first tunnel, the Devonshire Tunnel is 408m long and the second tunnel, Combe Down Tunnel is 1672m long. Both tunnels are well lit and well surfaced and have recently been converted into a shared use path for the enjoyment of runners, walkers and cyclists looking to make the most of the city whilst remaining on flatter ground.

How To Get There

The Two Tunnels events are being staged at Brickfields Open Space (BA2 1LX) in the city of Bath.

If you live in Bath please consider walking or cycling to the site in the spirit of our event partner Sustrans. We will provide bike racking for cyclists.

If you are driving to Bath please park at Odd Down Park & Ride (BA2 8PA) and catch the Two Tunnels bus to the race site. From here it is a 500m walk to the race site which will be signed with pink or orange signs.

Oldfield Park train station is approximately 800m from Brickfields.

What's Included

All runners collect one custom medal with each race and there are four medals to collect over the year.

If you are doing the challenge race, you can enter any distance race as your fourth race to get the fourth medal.

Format & Waves

At present all our starts are individual, at 15-30 second intervals. Runners are seeded fastest to slowest to help spread people out across the course. The only exception is that a pair from the same household may run together on the basis that you run the whole event together and that you run in single file, not side by side.

All runners need to provide a predicted finish time to help us organise the start lists. This doesn't need to be too exact so don't worry if you think it might have changed come race day. If you wish to run as a household pair please select the same slightly obscure predicted finish time. Rather then selecting 50mins 0secs, select 50mins 1 sec for example.

We are working towards larger wave sizes in time. We have therefore added a check box to the registration form where you can tell us the largest wave size you would feel comfortable running in; 1, 5, 25 or 50. If we get permission to have larger starts then we will provide starts on the basis of the wave sizes indicated.

Colourburst Info

There are two distances to chose from; 2km and 500m, each with multiple colour stations along the route! All runners will be given a white t-shirt to wear (small, medium or large) and we strongly recommend that you bring goggles or sun glasses to keep the colourburst out of your eyes. We also encourage mums and dads to consider a change of clothes and shoes for the car ride home :-)

These events are open for runners of all ages, particularly runners who would be too young to do our 5km race (min age 12). There is no minimum age for these colourburst runs and they are not timed events! Registration is £10 (2km), £8 for 500metres and includes a white t-shirt, custom medal and a selection of refreshments. Please note it's £2 extra to register on the day

The colourburst is infact 100% food grade corn starch with coloured dye, it is 100% safe, edible but not at all tasty so eating it is not encouraged, and 100% biodegradable.

5K & 10K Courses

5 km

This route is an officially measured accurate route. The whole route is on a fast tarmaced surface with gentle gradients of no more than 2% in only a few places on the route. This makes this a great fast course, certainly the fastest Relish Running course out there and there is a great chance of recording a PB on this route! The official course measurement reference number is 236/2201.

10 km

The whole route is on a fast tarmaced surface with gentle gradients of no more than 2% in only a few places on the route. This makes this a great fast course, certainly the fastest Relish Running course out there and there is a great chance of recording a PB on this route! The official course measurement reference number is 236/2201

Competitor information

Please note there is a cut off of 3hrs for the marathon runners to complete the first lap (approx 13.3 miles). After this time runners will have to complete the half marathon course. They can still collect a half marathon medal but unfortunately we won't be able to provide a finish time. There are no cut offs for the other distances.

Runners with buggies are very welcome for the 5km, Return Ticket 10km and Return Ticket Half Marathon races only. The other routes have gates, steps or stiles which make them unsuitable for buggies. If you are running with a buggy you need to start at the back of your wave as there is some narrow, uneven ground after 150m for which it would be best if you were not in the middle of a group. Unfortunately none of the events are suitable for canicross.

Where two prices are show below this is for affiliated/unaffiliated runners. Where prices are shown as a range this depends on the distances selected as well as the affiliated/unaffiliated status of the runners. There are no hidden booking or processing fees in top.

Please note prices are £2 extra for on the day registrations, £5 extra for Mini Challenge/Challenge on the day registrations. There are great group discount rates for groups of 10 or more runners taking part in races of any distance, on the same date. 10-19 runners save 15%, 20-49 runners save 20%, 50+ runners save 25%. All bookings must be made in advance of race day to qualify for the discounted rate. We ask all groups to be registered at least four weeks in advance of the race date to we have the opportunity to top up our medal order if necessary.

I ran the marathon but before the race I received no race information and had to get everything searching on the site to get answers. The course is good just a shame about the incline towards the end which is demoralising.
Hi Nicola The full race information was on our website 10 weeks before the event, on the Event Info page on our website. An email was sent to all runners on the Monday of race week, with a few key reminders and further directing runners to the info page. Unfortunately emails sometimes get picked up by spam filters, but all the info was there in plenty of time :-)

Lovely race, welcoming of all abilities, smiling and cheering marshals, and I loved running through the tunnels, especially on a warm June day. The route is shared with the public so you'll get a few cyclists overtaking but they were all respectful and shared the path (as did the runners).

Well organised as ever, and it was quite a novelty to run through the two tunnels! My only slight gripe was that I had quite a long wait for the shuttle bus back to the P&R car park, but this didn't detract from a most enjoyable experience. For future entrants, I would definitely recommend wearing a headlight, as the lighting in the tunnels is quite dim.

I really liked running the tunnels, very cool temperature as your doing the half marathon return so allowed me to go faster, I would bring a headlight. Need to work on how to start the race so we don't do the precarious mud slide down to the path....maybe throw down some gravel or bark? The marshals were great Enjoyed the race and got a half marathon PB

Great run, very well organised. Fairly flat for Bath, and the tunnels make the run interesting as well as breaking up the run. Big shout out to all of the volunteers who help to make it a great day.

Really great race! Very well organised with friendly encouraging marshals. I'm definitely looking forward to gaining the second half of my medal in the next race! If you haven't ran in March then get yourself booked on for June!! Thank you to everyone that made the race a success and well done to all who participated!

Nice flat course (I did the 10K) with a good atmosphere and friendly volunteers. The tunnels were really cool on a hot day, too!

This was my first marathon and I'm very pleased I chose Relish running and this event. The course had a lot of variation that keeps you going taking in some beautiful areas on the edge of Bath and within. I was also lucky enough to win a prize which I wasnt expecting! I had an email to say I could choose another race as a prize. Looking forward to picking one, it won't be the last with Relish! Thanks, Tim Sutton

Great route - but the path is not closed off so a little scary with some members of public on bikes going way too fast. Overall a good event and the tunnels are cool!

Lovely venue, very well organised although the medal was disappointing, nothing like what was advertised. I understand the need for sustainable products but they could do some colour and better quality

Excellent race, I did the return half (deceptive early hill for a flat course) and had a great time doing it. Everyone was super nice and the post-race snacks were excellent. Lots to do for the families during the event too. Best race I've ever done!

Ran the Hilly Half. Absolutely beautiful course across the Bath countryside, very well organised, and lovely supportive marshals. Couldn't have asked for more. Thanks to the organisers.

Lovely scenery and great support. This is a lovely scenic route; lots of miles along the canal, some beautiful views of the viaducts and the tunnel stretches kept things interesting. The support was excellent and the Marathon ran smoothly. This had a very relaxed and friendly feel to the day. There was no on site parking and the park and ride was a bit of a faff for being so far away from the city centre, similarly, the start/finish line are a little away from the city centre making it a bit tricky for family to support. The route map could be a little clearer to help family track the route and offer support, but the route was very clear on the day itself. If the start/finish were in a more central location, or a closer park and ride was arranged, I'd definitely give this five stars - but the positives; a beautiful route, organised well, with super friendly people gets this four stars from me.

10k route. I was so impressed on how well organised it was! The 10k route is nice and flat as you would imagine it would be being an old railway line. Lovely and cool through the tunnels, really impressive! If you’re at your infancy in running or you want a PB then this is ideal!! This is definitely one for my running event calendar!!

Underground, overground..... Interesting, well-organised race through tunnels, villages and along a great stretch of towpath; brilliantly marshalled throughout; main difficulty apart from the relentlessness of waterside miles was weaving through Sunday crowds in the city centre stretches; rates high as a 'special' race.

Half marathon route. There is a cheeky bit of hill work mile 3-4 then goes flat along the canal found it difficult with lack of support on this part, very very cheeky hill at the end but was well organised

Super well organised event. I did my first Two Tunnels event yesterday and was very impressed with the organisation. Getting there was easy, park and ride buses laid on. There were several waves for each distance and the tunnels made running a whole new experience.

Absolutely unique. One tunnel is 1KM , Other is 1 mile. you go through them and back, twice. So you spend the majority of this run underground and out of the heat and sun. Absolutely unique run and I really enjoyed it, very flat

An extravagant route. One of the best extravagant routes for a PB on a half marathon! Fantastic tunnels to cool off in whilst undergoing the route and an overall flat course; to enable a PB!
