Get ready to experience the thrill of competition at the Storm The Castle Duathlon, taking place on Sunday, May 18th, 2025, in the picturesque town of Ludlow, Shropshire. Organized by Andali Events, this legendary race has garnered a reputation as one of the UK's most challenging and beloved duathlons, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024. Athletes of all levels are invited to participate, with two exciting distances available: the traditional Full Storm, featuring approximately 10km of running, a 33km bike ride, and a final 5km run, or the popular 30km Sprint Course, which includes a 5km run, 23km bike ride, and a 2.5km final run.

The event also welcomes younger participants with the Junior Storm for athletes under 16, making it a fantastic family-friendly occasion. As part of the British Triathlon series, all adult participants must demonstrate membership or purchase a day pass. Organiser's Description

Having celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024, Storm The Castle continues to be one of the UK’s most popular and most challenging duathlons.

Each year, athletes return to do battle with this legendary race on the streets and surrounding countryside of Ludlow. With two distances to choose as well as a Junior Storm for under 16s, Storm The Castle needs to be a part of your 2025 race calendar. Will you be #leftinruins?

Traditionally, this has always been a tough 48km distance duathlon. In 2023 we introduced a 30km Sprint Course, which has proved very popular.

Full Storm: approx. 10km run, 33km bike, 5km run format,
Sprint Storm: approx. 5km run, 23km bike and 2.5km,

As this is a British Triathlon licensed event, all adult athletes will be required to demonstrate British Triathlon membership or purchase a day pass.

Course Details

For the Full Course, the run is approximately 10km for Run 1 and 5k for Run 2. The run for the Short Course is approximately 5km for Run 1, and 2.5km for Run 2. The runs for both courses are tough and hilly, including sections of road and off road terrain. For Junior Storm, the run is approximately 800m, around the Castle.

Run Course
For the Full Course, the run is approximately 10km for Run 1 and 5k for Run 2. The run for the Sprint Course is approximately 5km for Run 1, and 2.5km for Run 2. The runs for both courses are tough and hilly, including sections of road and off road terrain.

Bike Course
The Full Course bike route is a challenging 33km with enough undulation to rival the hardest bike courses in the UK. This course includes approximately 500m of elevation and takes you on a route from Shropshire, into Herefordshire and back into Shropshire to finish back at transition. The climbing comes in two main sections, including a 7km climb over Fiddlers Elbow and nearing the end of the ride, you climb through Mortimer Forest before a fast, short descent off Whitcliffe common. The Sprint Course bike route is approximately 24km, initially taking the same route as the Full Course, cutting through towards Downton on the Rock before re-joining the Full Course for the final climb from Pipe Aston.

By signing up, you can expect a great quality race, that concludes in the outer bailey of Ludlow Castle, where the crowds will cheer you across the finish line. Event village with food provided by the excellent Beefy Boys and Pizza Girls, free face painting and bouncy castles for the kids.

How to Get There

By Road:
Ludlow is situated on the A49 trunk road which runs from Warrington, through Shrewsbury and Hereford to Ross-on-Wye. From Birmingham, head west on the A456 through Kidderminster. From the M5 leave at junction 3 and continue on the A456 through Kidderminster.

By Rail:
For times and fares, contact National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 (24hrs) or visit the Arriva Trains Wales website www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk or to plan your journey to Ludlow from anywhere in the UK visit the Journey Planner section on www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Parking

There is parking available at the race HQ, that will be managed by members of Ludlow Rugby Club. Parking and use of the rugby club facilities is included in the ticket price, so you will NOT need to pay an additional parking fee on the day.

**Exiting the car park at Ludlow Rugby Club post race will be prohibited until the final athletes have completed the course. This is to ensure athlete safety on the run course**

Location

The event is based in Ludlow, Shropshire, with the race Head Quarters located on the grounds of Ludlow Rugby Club, The Linney, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 1EE. Registration, parking and transition will all take place here. The finish line is in the Outer Bailey of Ludlow Castle.

FAQs

  • What time does it start?

    The start time for the Standard Distance and Sprint Distance races will be 0800, with your official recorded time beginning once you cross the chip timer at the start.

  • What is the minimum age for entry?

    For the Sprint Distance and Standard Distance athletes must be a minimum of 16 years at time of competing.

  • Is drafting allowed?

    The race will be run under British Triathlon rules and regulations. A copy of these can be found on the British Triathlon website.

  • How does the registration process work?

    Registration will be available at Ludlow Rugby Club on Sunday 18 May 2025,on race morning. Full details will be provided in the Athlete Guide, that will be emailed to you one week before the event. We do not send out race numbers or timing chips in the post.

  • Are there cut off times for the race?

    No. We will not be imposing a cut off for the race. However if the race organisers feel that you are not in a fit and healthy condition to finish the race then they will inform you and their decision will be final.
