Navigation Essentials - Learn How to Map Read

Sat 25th April 2026

Image of an open map lying on grassy ground, with a blurred background of a countryside landscape. Overlaid text reads "Workshop: Navigation Essentials." In the bottom left corner, there is the logo of "RUN the WILD." The map and text hint at outdoor navigation training. Two people hike along a grassy trail at the edge of a wheat field. One wears a red shirt, and the other is in dark clothing. Ahead are rolling hills, a small house, and a forest under a blue sky with scattered clouds. The scene is bright and sunny. Two people stand outdoors holding a map. The person on the left, wearing a pink jacket and black gloves, points at the map while the person on the right, who is wearing a black cap and holding a compass, closely examines it. Green fields and a small structure are visible in the background. A group of people dressed in outdoor gear, including hats and jackets, stand together in an open field, holding maps. One person is pointing at a map while the others watch attentively, wearing expressions of interest and focus. A tower is visible in the background. A group of people jog on a grassy path through a hilly, open countryside. They all wear athletic clothing and some don bright jackets. Leafless trees and expansive fields stretch out in the background beneath an overcast sky. Five people, dressed in winter clothing with backpacks and holding maps, walk down a muddy, tree-lined trail through a forest. The sky is overcast, and there are no leaves on the trees, suggesting a late autumn or winter setting.

Organiser's Description

Ever got fed up with doing extra distance in a race because you took the wrong turn?! Always just following the people ahead of you? Or maybe you just want to get to grips with map reading. In this series we will be teaching you navigation methods as well as practical tips of how to stay on the right path in wild areas of the UK and Europe as well as understanding how this can practically relate to trail running. We all hear far too often of people getting lost in the hills either in races or just indeed on leisurely hikes. Even a GPS has limited capacity in route finding but with the right knowledge you can be the ultimate GPS!

On this morning workshop you will be taught the essentials of navigating with a map by a qualified International Mountain Leader and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Assessor. The first part of the morning is based near Church Farm Cafe, in the quintessentially English village of Aldbury. Once you’ve learnt some of the basics we move onto the trails to provide practical experience. The workshop will finish around midday.
