Organiser's Description

This event is the Sunday event of the weekend.

Here we go again, a New Year and it’s time to mix things up a little with a whole new medal design and a full weekend of running! As always the event will be a six-hour challenge on a looped course around the beautiful forest which is looked after by the UK Forestry Commission. You may attempt to complete as many laps as possible over the full six hours, or you may choose to finish just one, either way, you will be a finisher and receive your bespoke medal and goody bag.

As the event was so popular in 2023, we have decided to take over the forest for the full weekend, giving you a run on the Saturday and then reversing the loop for you all on the Sunday! If can join us for one or for both events.

The loop at Sherwood Pines is exactly 5.79km long which means if you complete 4 laps you have done a half marathon, 8 laps, a full marathon and 9 laps or more will be classed as an Ultra.

At Rasselbock we like to put on events how we'd like to have them. No stress, pressure, a great bunch of runners, and a small entry pool so everyone can meet each other. You can decide on the day how far you'd like to run so there are no worries if you're having a "bad running day". Just complete one lap of the event and you're classed as a finisher.

Course Details

The route sets off from our own dedicated Race HQ area as we head into the forest weaving through the Pines. The route is on a mixed trail of forest floor, muddy areas, and packed gravel paths. Enough of a mix to keep the laps interesting. There are some hills included in the route for free, but nothing that you cannot manage.

How to Get There

The nearest train stations are Mansfield and Retford. Mansfield has a public bus to the county park roughly every 15 minutes (Bus No. 14, 15 or 15A to Archway Road or Sherwood Pines). This does vary at the weekend and it is always best to check the timetables before booking. After the bus, there is around a 1-mile walk into the forest to the start line. Usually, on a Sunday morning, it is best to pre-book a taxi to the start line. If you are staying overnight before the event and using public transport, then I would recommend looking at places to stay in Edwinstone, Clipstone, or Ollerton. All are a very short taxi ride from the forest.

Parking

There is a large car park with Sherwood Pines Forest which we are permitted to use. There is a charge for the car park which we, unfortunately, cannot offer a discount on.

As always we encourage people to car share or use public transport as much as possible when coming to our events. Not only does this mean we help the environment a little but it also means that people get to know each other a little more and you can share the costs of petrol and the car park!

If you are looking for a lift or have space in your car, then make sure you post in our Team Rasselbock Facebook group to see who else is heading that way.

Location

The park will be open from 8am, and from the car park area you will need to head towards the visitor center (the only buildings on the site). With the center on your right and GO Ape on your left, keep walking down the pathway until you see the large Rasselbock flags at the Race HQ.

We really enjoyed the race and both set personal bests for ourselves. My wife ran 18 miles (5 laps) and I ran 32.5 miles (9 laps), all within the 6 hour allotted time. The setting, Sherwood Pines, was an undulating course with a couple of hill climbs. There was a mixture of compacted gravel path and woodland. The woodland parts were particularly fun. I wore road shoes for the event, which turned out to be fine.
