Testimonial from GB Athlete Jo Pavey -

'I really enjoyed running the Windsor Women’s 10K in 2018 and I thoroughly recommend it. It’s a very uplifting and fantastic event with so many women running together and encouraging each other, there’s a great feeling of camaraderie. The course is absolutely stunning and is entirely within the grounds of Windsor Great Park. It has a few undulations but is good underfoot, so you can really get into your running. The event is so well organised with lots of friendly volunteers, and it provides such a great opportunity for so many women to enjoy their running. I can’t wait to run in the event again this year.'

Race Day

You will have received your race number through the post, together with information about car parking etc. (If you have not received anything by the week before you must contact the Race Office. Email: [email protected]; Tel: 01384 379028)

Make sure that take part in our Aerobic warm up, taken by a Qualified Instructor, it is great fun and certainly gets you warmed up!

Make sure that you have everything you need: • Shoes (make sure you have worn them before you race in them!) • Clean socks. • Shorts. • Vest / T-shirt. • Track bottoms. • Warm Top (Waterproof if weather is likely to be bad). • Extra clothes in case the weather is cold/wet. • Race number/Race Information book • Safety pins (for your number). • Bottle of water. • Energy bar / banana for post race. • Travel information (Any travel tickets you may have bought).

This is not a definitive list but does cover the most important items that you will need.

There will be a public address system to keep everyone updated as the start time approaches.

Preparation: As the race start time gets nearer, make sure you visit the toilet and warm up – be careful when warming up – it is so easy to do too much particularly if this is your first one. some jogging and our Aerobic warm up should be plenty!

Lining Up: Everyone lines up according to their expected finishing time, with the faster more experienced runners right on the start line and those expecting to finish later, further back. This way, no-one is impeded and it is essential that you do this! You do not want to be caught up with the fast runner’s right at the start.

Start: An air horn is sounded and the race begins. Unless you are right on the start line, progress will be slightly slower as the runners move away – which is often a good thing because you are not tempted to go too fast at the beginning, which can ruin your race.

Finish: The finish line will be clearly marked and you will be able to see the gantry from the top of the Long Walk – 1.5 km away!

Post Finish: As you cross the finish line you will be marshalled into “funnels” where you will be asked to keep moving forward to receive your medal and water will be available, then make your way to the T-shirt Marquee to collect your finishers t-shirt. It is imperative that you do keep moving. You can then reunited with family and friends, get warm/dry kit on and reflect on what was a fantastic achievement!

Course Details

The course start and finishes along the Long Walk with the start being around 190m further up the Long Walk to enable us to use the Windsor Half Marathon finish.

Along the course you will pass the Royal Lodge which was the Queen Mother’s residence and is now home to Prince Andrew, the Royal School and then at around 5.5 km you will pass the Statue of Queen Elizabeth II erected in celebration of her Golden Jubilee. It is then almost all downhill to the finish as you sweep onto the top of the Long Walk with Windsor Castle as the back drop.

If you’ve never done a 10K before this is THE best one to enter. Having competed in R4W’s events many times before I knew that this would be a fantastic race. Easy online entry and communication by email and on social media from the organisers right up to the day of the race, and afterwards, were excellent. The race is open to all abilities from very inexperienced beginners to experienced runners. The closed Facebook group for the event is really friendly and it’s good to chat with other ladies doing the race and indeed since. The unique setting of Windsor Great Park is glorious - a lovely, misty sunny late September morning, deer, fantastic views, more than ample free parking (always a bonus at an event) and the best portaloos ever, what’s not to like? The atmosphere was amazingly friendly, lots and lots of lovely ladies all running and walking for their own reasons. There was a real buzz waiting for the start of the race especially with Jo Pavey starting the race - she’s such an inspiration, even got her autograph after the race. This is a slightly challenging 10K with a climb right at the beginning but that’s what makes it so much fun! The scenery all the way round is beautiful and the marshals and Park residents were very encouraging - much appreciated when I was struggling at a couple of points! Water stations located just where needed and the waste zones are a brilliant idea. The run back down to the finish includes a stunning view of Windsor Castle. The spectators along the last couple of kilometres cheered everyone. This event always has fab finishers’ medals and t shirts and this year’s were no exception. Thank you R4W and to all the volunteers involved in making this such a memorable, friendly event, I will definitely be entering again! Carol
