Signing up for a 5k or a 10k race is usually a good place to start. You’ll be able to experience the atmosphere and nerves of a proper race day without all the training and added pressure that often comes with a half or full marathon. Start with a 5k if you’d rather keep your first event short; if you’re already running regularly, have a look at 10k races. The best option for you depends on your current fitness level and how much time you’re willing to spend training.

A handful of long-distance and multi-day events are already listed into July 2029, but that’s quite unusual. Most ordinary weekend races appear much closer to race day. If a future month looks a bit quiet, it might just be that organisers haven’t opened entries yet.
