Running events FAQs

What race distance should I enter first if I have never done an organised running event?

Signing up for a 5k or a 10k race is usually a good place to start. You’ll be able to experience the atmosphere and nerves of a proper race day without all the training and added pressure that often comes with a half or full marathon. Start with a 5k if you’d rather keep your first event short; if you’re already running regularly, have a look at 10k races. The best option for you depends on your current fitness level and how much time you’re willing to spend training.

How many running events are listed in the UK, and how far ahead can I book one?

There are currently more than 1,100 running events on Find a Race, ranging from races taking place this week to events published years in advance. A handful of long-distance and multi-day events are already listed into July 2029, but that’s quite unusual. Most ordinary weekend races appear much closer to race day. If a future month looks a bit quiet, it might just be that organisers haven’t opened entries yet.

Are UK running events mostly on road, or off road?

There are plenty of road races and off-road races to choose from across the UK, depending on what you prefer; there’s no clear majority either way. Signing up for a running race doesn’t have to mean pounding the pavement - if you already know you’d rather swap roads for woodland, paths and open countryside, the trail running calendar is a more useful place to browse.

Are UK running events flat, or should I expect serious climbing?

You’ll find everything from very flat courses to races where the hills are a major part of the challenge. Plenty of events describe themselves as flat, but others are listed as undulating or hilly, and many don’t publish enough information to put them confidently into any of those categories. Ideally, check the event description before you sign up and look at the elevation profile if one has been provided. The distance alone isn’t enough to determine how much of a challenge the race will be.

What time do UK running events usually start?

Morning starts are most common, with 10am appearing frequently across the calendar. Some events begin later, and bigger races often send runners out in waves instead of everyone starting at the same time. Night owls will be pleased to know that there are even some races that start in the evening or at night.

How much does it cost to enter a UK running event?

Entry prices vary massively because the running calendar covers everything from small local races to multi-day challenges and running trips abroad. At the cheaper end, some current events cost less than £10, while plenty of straightforward weekend 5ks and 10ks sit somewhere in the tens of pounds. Specialist events can cost far more - the current calendar includes multi-day and overseas races priced in the hundreds. Make sure you check what’s included as well as the headline entry fee, particularly if you’re comparing very different types of race.

Are organised running events worth it if I am slow, or are they aimed at club runners?

Organised running events are for everyone, not only people who are fast or members of a club. The UK calendar includes smaller local races, fun runs and events built around completing your own number of laps, alongside more traditional competitive races. That gives you plenty of choice if your goal is just to take part rather than chase a particular time. Do check any cut-off before entering a longer race, though, because those rules are set by individual organisers rather than applying to running events as a whole.

How many people take part in a typical UK running event?

There isn’t a typical event size because races vary so much; some are very small, capping entries at around 100 people, while others might set the maximum number to 300 or more. Major mass participation races are even bigger.
