Registration was simple enough and no queues, the race brief was delayed due to a fault with the timing system, which is fair enough. The brief we did get was minimal which was fine for us as we know the area well, and access is relatively easy. We checked the route on the organisers website, so knew the route ahead of time. I was surprised to find we didn't follow the advertised route and turned off on a different fire road, which was shorter and brought the total distance down to 4.4 miles. On top of that a car was squeezing past runners on the course to drop marchals out, after the event had already started showed some really poor organisation. The marchals were cheerful and loud considering the near freezing temperatures though and the medal was good.
Hi Andrew, Thank you for your review and your understanding regarding a few delays on the day. As you mentioned, we did have a slight delay on the 5 mile race due to a few late arrivals and whereby we had to wait for the next window to open on the timing system. In regards to the course being slightly shorter, I had explained the reason in the brief and I also waited at the finish line to apologise for this for those that may not have heard due to it being a big crowd at the start. This last minute decision to change the course was for the safety of the runners due to the frozen water on part of the cause that we just couldn’t clear in time and we made a decision to alter the course rather than cancel the race altogether. This was not an easy decision but the right one for everyone’s safety, so hopefully you can understand this. Unfortunately, you’re correct - we did have a vehicle leaving the course but parked up in a safe position to allow runners to pass. This was due to an earlier incident with the marshal drop off vehicle getting stuck in the area mentioned above with the ice and water, so I made a decision for another marshal to pick the remaining Marshals up from the broken down vehicle and place on the course. Thankfully we did have marshals in the right places and these Marshals getting dropped off, were sent as a safety measure so Marshals did not stand out In the cold on their own incase something serious happened. I do respect and appreciate your view and thoughts on the event and this will help in future events I am holding this year. As you can imagine, this is a new venture for me and Out There Running Ltd and I strive to grow this community for all to enjoy. Hopefully we can have you back one day at one of our future events. Thank you once again and I wish you a successful and fun year of running. Steven

There were positives - the support of the Marshalls around the course; running in Moors Valley in the dark. However, the course was far too short at 8.65 miles (not 10) and despite goody bags listed there were none, just a tub of sweets. Really needs to be better for the price paid, I felt disappointed overall.
Hi Kate, Firstly, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. This was not an easy decision but the right one for everyone’s safety, so it’s slightly disappointing that you may have missed this reasoning and I am sorry for that. I am glad I made the decision to alter the course as the safety for everyone is my priority and this is why we conduct course checks. As you’re aware, it was an extremely cold night and things change very quickly and the team and myself did an amazing job to keep this event alive for everyone to enjoy the race. Regarding the goodie bags, we did indeed have them but unfortunately some bystanders or families of those running had helped themselves to these and they disappeared very quickly as soon as people saw sweets and chocolate in these. Something I am aware I need to monitor better in the dark. From a business point of view, the price paid for this event was more than reasonable for what was on offer and the cost of the venue, first aid, insurance, goodies and those amazingly big medals and the 10% donation to charity. This is pretty standard pricing in the events business for these types of events. I do appreciate your feedback and hopefully this has cleared up some things. Thank you once again for taking part in my first ever night race and my second ever event as a new trail events business. Hopefully you will give us a second chance to show you how fun our events are in the future. Wishing you a successful year of running. Steven
