Organiser's Description

Join us for one of the best-loved half marathon and 10K events in Sussex. Our next race day is Sunday 24th September 2023 and we’d love to see you on that start line!

This year we have added a 5K race to the Run Barns Green portfolio so hopefully that will attract even more runners to the event. The 5K race will start at 9.50am, the Half Marathon will start at 10.05am and the 10K race will start at 10.25K. We also have the Jennings Junior Jog at around 12.30pm for 4-11 year olds.

All the senior races are run on closed roads and have chip timing, pacemakers, and gold silver and bronze medals for all finishers. There are plenty of water stations on the 10K and half marathon routes.

The car parking is free and there are some stunning views of the Sussex countryside on the way round. There is a professional warm up for all 4 races. Our road closures begin at 9.30am so please make sure you get to Barns Green early on race day.

This award winning event is organised entirely by volunteers and relies on the loyalty and commitment of the committee who work tirelessly to maintain and improve the standards of the races each year. Our nominated 2023 charity St Catherine’s Hospice, which we hope you will generously support.

There is plenty of time to train and get run ready, so why not set yourself a challenge and make your way to the start line this September

We hope you can join us for another successful Run Barns Green event.

Half Marathon

Starts at 10:05 am
The Half Marathon is the oldest race in the Run Barns Green portfolio. It began in 1982 just after the first ever London Marathon. It has been run every year since then with the exception of 1987 when there was the great storm and in 2020 when the pandemic struck. 2023 will be the 41st anniversary of the race.

The race route begins on Muntham Drive outside the Village Hall and Social Club in the centre of Barns Green. The route goes down to the village crossroads and then along Two Mile Ash Road for a mile and a half leaving the village and heading towards Horsham. The route then turns sharp left over the old railway bridge crossing the South Downs Link by the Bax Castle Pub and proceeds towards Christ’s Hospital for another mile. Dropping down towards Christ’s Hospital the route then takes a very sharp left turn through the East Gates of Christ’s Hospital School and into the school grounds. The runners enter the school grounds where there is the first water station and then get to run along the picturesque school avenue before exiting the school grounds through the West Gates. The route then turns left over the railway bridge and heads towards Weston’s Farm before turning left and joining the main road and heading back towards Barns Green.

There is a slight incline before taking a right turn into Itchingfield heading towards the church. As the runners reach the bend they turn left by the old Barns Green Primary School into the back lane and proceed along this for a mile passing Barns Green Rugby Club on the right before reaching the grounds of Muntham House School. The runners go through the school grounds and there is a short section on grass before rejoining the road out of the school and back onto Muntham Drive and past the start finish line in the centre of Barns Green where there is the second drinks station.

This is the start of the second loop of the race. Once again the runners go over the crossroads but this time just before they leave the village they turn right into Trout Lane. A short way down Trout Lane is the half way point of the race. The route then continues out of the village for a mile down to Brookes Green where there is a left turn at the junction. Runners are really in the country now and there is a 2 mile section of the race through the wooded lanes towards Dragons Green. As the runners approach Dragons Green there is another drinks station. The route reaches the Dragon’s Green pub before turning and heading back for a couple of miles towards the finish skirting Southwater. The final drinks station is at the junction of the route into Southwater and the runners then continue back towards the village rejoining Two Mile ash Road but running in the opposite direction from the first loop. After a mile and a half the runners re enter Barns Green with the finish in sight and head over the crossroads and up to the start/finish line.

10k

Starts at 10:25 am
The 10K race began in 2016 and this year will be the 8th anniversary of the race.

The runners enter the school grounds where there is a water station and then get to run along the picturesque school avenue before branching left off the avenue separating from the half marathon route for a short while and going along a road through the school playing fields before rejoining the half marathon route and exiting the school grounds through the West Gates. The route then turns left over the railway bridge and heads towards Weston’s Farm before turning left and joining the main road and heading back towards Barns Green.

There is a slight incline before once again separating from the half marathon route and then going straight on for the final 1.5 kilometres downhill into the village finishing beside the green in Sandhills Road.

5K

Starts at 09:50 am
This is the first time Run Barns Green has staged a 5K race and the new route is very exciting. It starts on Muntham Drive outside the Village Hall and Social Club in the centre of Barns Green. Unlike the Half Marathon and the 10K, the route starts with the runners going away from the crossroads up to the entrance to Muntham House School. The route goes through Muntham House School and onto the long lane at the top of the hill past Barns Green Rugby Club on the left and all the way along to the old Barns Green Primary School in Itchingfield where runners turn right onto the road for about 500 metres. At the junction runners turn right and go on for about 400 metres before turning left into a field leading to Sharpenhust Hill. The runners will then get a spectacular view from the top of the hill of Christ’s Hospital School and the surrounding countryside. This short section off tarmac leads back towards the main road where there is a left turn onto the road before then going straight on for the final 1.5 kilometres downhill into the village finishing beside the green in Sandhills Road.

faqs

What time should I arrive?
As early as you can, but you should aim to arrive by 9:00 am at the latest. There is a road closure order in place and this is enforced from 9:30 am

Push chairs, buggies, bikes, skateboards, animals etc
Entrants are not permitted to race with any of the above and anyone attempting to do so will be disqualified. Guide dogs are not permitted but we do offer a free place for guide runners.

Are there any age restrictions?
You must be 17 years of age to enter the Half Marathon and 15 years of age to enter the 10K. Entrants under 18 must have parental permission

Where do the races start and finish?
Barns Green Village Hall, Muntham Drive, Barns Green, Nr Horsham, West Sussex RH13 0PT.

How do I get to the venue?
Barns Green is 5 miles South-West of Horsham and 3 miles East of Billingshurst. The nearest train stations are Horsham, Christ’s Hospital or Billingshurst. There are no public buses on Race Day

Is there a cut off time?
The Run Barns Green races are running races in which participants should make best efforts to complete the course within 2 hours for the 10k and 3.5 hours for the half marathon.

The event has a staggered road closure order in force so we can appropriately facilitate the roads reopening for business and resident access, and to protect all participants. After these times the roads will be reopened and throughout the race a sweep car will collect those at the back unable to keep up with the allotted pace; 20 minutes per mile for 10k and 16 minutes per mile for half marathon

Are there any road closures?
The race route has a rolling road closure order from West Sussex County Council. Please note that the closure begins to take effect at 9:30 am and is in effect until 1:30 pm. Entrants for the 10K will be directed to a specific car park which will enable them to leave as soon as logistically possible.

Where can I leave my kit?
Please limit the number of belongings you bring to the event and if possible, leave anything in a car. This is in order to reduce contact between runners and staff. There will be an informal self-service bag drop area within the start and finish area for runners who need it. Please note items are left at your own risk.

What happens if I cannot take part?
Event entries are non-refundable. If you cannot take part you may be able to transfer your number to another runner. You will need to fill out a runner to runner transfer form in the link above and pay £5.00 to do this. Please do not run using someone else’s number as this will result in disqualification.

What should I do with my timing tag if I cannot take part?
Please return the tag in the stamped addressed envelope provided. All our profits go to local causes and we are charged for non-returned tags

What happens if the race is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the race if adverse weather should make conditions too dangerous or a serious incident occurs that prevents the races from going ahead. In this event, there will be no refunds.

Good - Lots of Marshall’s Lots of local support Closed roads Bad - Massive cues to collect race number not enough staff Still using plastic cups ?! Crazy amount of hills
Hi Chris - the queues we experienced were down to over 300 runners not receiving their runner pack in the post despite them being posted 3 weeks before the event, this was also the same issue which impacted the Vitality 10000 in London on the same date. We will be posting the 2024 packs out 4 weeks before which we hope would be enough time for Royal Mail. The plastic cups are ones we sourced several years ago and are made of recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable, however as people don't know this and it impacts reviews on other sites we will be moving to compostable paper cups next year. Thanks you for the review.
