Organiser's Description

The Great West Run half marathon will take you through the heart of Exeter, followed by pretty country lanes and stunning views across Exeter, with a fantastic stadium finish.

The brand new 10km route will follow the first and final 3 miles of the half marathon.

The Community Mile takes place alongside the famous Great West Run Half Marathon and brand new 10km.

The-mile-long fun run is designed to encourage first time runners, families, friends, colleagues and teams to come together and challenge themselves to get active for a fitter, healthier life. 

Great for beginners and experts alike, this event should be on all your running calendars.

Course Details

ROUTE
The Elysium Healthcare Great West Run takes an exciting 13.1 miles route through the heart of Exeter. This half marathon has it all; a journey through the city centre, followed by pretty country lanes and stunning views across Exeter and a fantastic stadium finish.

Parking

There is no official race car park and there will be no parking available at Exeter Arena - if you have to drive to the event we advise using pay and display car parks in the city centre and purchasing a shuttle bus ticket when you sign up or via the event shop. Q. What is the date of The Great West Run 2023?
A. Sunday 21st May 2023.

Q. What time does the race start?
A. Our Half Marathon race starts at 9:00, followed by our 10k race at 09:30, and our Community Mile race at 09:40.

Q. Where is the start/finish?
A. The half marathon will start and finish at Exeter Arena

Q. How old must I be to enter?
A. You must be 17 years or older on race day. Younger runners can take part in the Community Mile.

Q. How much does it cost to register?
Entries cost £44.

Q. I have entered the race - how do I know my entry has been received?
A. If you entered online, you will receive a confirmation email shortly afterwards. If you have not received a confirmation email, please contact us at [email protected]

Q. When do entries close?
A. Entries close at midnight on Monday 1st May.

Q. When will I receive my race pack?
A. Race packs will be sent out during the last two weeks leading up to the race.

Q. Can I run wearing an iPod, MP3 player or other personal stereo device?
A. We advise against the use of iPods, MP3 players or other personal stereo devices to ensure runners are able to hear any announcements or medical alerts.

Q. Can I sign up on the day?
A. No. We cannot accept entries on the day.

Q. Do I need to register on the day after I've signed up?
A. No. Just come along and line up in your allocated start pen.

Q. Where is the race village?
A. The race village is at Exeter Arena

Q. Can I run in fancy dress?
A. Yes, as long as it is not obstructive to other runners.

Q. Is there a cut-off time for runners?
A. The cut-off time for 4 miles is 1 hour 10 minutes. At 3 hours 30 minutes, any participants remaining on the course will be asked to move onto the pavement.

Q. Will there be pacers?
A. Yes. We have pacers from 1 hour 30 minutes at 15 minutes intervals up to 2 hours 30 minutes.

Q. Can I transfer my entry to someone else?
A. Yes, you can transfer your entry to another runner for an admin fee of £10. You must not, under any circumstances, give your race number to anyone else. Among other potential problems, doing so may cause problems of identification for the event medical services in the event of any accident or injury.

Q. Can I have a refund if I can no longer take part?
A. You are entitled to a refund within the first 7 days of signing up (the cooling off period). After this period you are not eligible for a refund.

Q. Can I defer my place to 2024?
A. Yes, you can defer your entry for an admin fee of £10. Unfortunately, if you have deferred from our 2022 event, you will not be able to defer again.

Q. Is there a deadline to defer or transfer my place?
A. Yes, the deadline for our 2023 event is Monday 1st May 2023.

*Participants falling behind the pace required to finish by 12:30 will be asked to move to the pavement.

Take some time to read the race instructions prior to the day, this can significantly reduce pre race stress!

TRAVEL INFO & PARKING:
There is no official race car park and there will be no parking available at Exeter Arena - if you have to drive to the event we advise using pay and display car parks in the city centre and purchasing a shuttle bus ticket when you sign up or via the event shop. If you intend to be dropped off by car for the event, we advise being dropped off in roads surrounding Exeter Arena and walking the final bit

Be aware of road closures and timings.
If you intend to use public transport please take into consideration road closures and the early start.
There will be bicycle racking available at the race village.
Please plan your journey accordingly!

SHUTTLE BUSES:
Shuttle buses will run from Exeter city centre bus station to the race start at Exeter Arena.
Buses will depart from Exeter city centre bus station between 7am and 7.45am, but we encourage runners to arrive early as the service will be busy. The last buses will depart at 7.45am to arrive at the Arena by 8am.
Return services will run from approximately 11.15am (or when the first bus is full), dropping runners back to the bus station.

TRAINING & WELFARE:
Your personal commitment is to train for the event appropriately – making sure you are fully prepared for the day.

If you have been unwell or injured in the days leading up to the event then we would advise you not to take part.

BAGGAGE:
Your baggage can either be left with a friend or family member, or at the baggage store located in the event village.
Please use the baggage label that will come attached to your race number.
Baggage is left entirely at your own risk – we strongly advise you not to leave valuable items.

START ASSEMBLY INFORMATION:
Allow plenty of time to get to the start – the race will not be delayed due to late arrivals.
Line up in the appropriate time zone relating to your anticipated finish time – you timing chip will not be activated until you cross the start line.

ROUTE:
The route is fully signed and marshalled – please follow marshal instruction.
Aid stations are along the route with water, toilets and medical support.
Participants will be asked to move onto the pavement if they fall behind the road re-opening schedule - on sections where there is no pedestrian footpath, participants will be re-routed.
Everyone will be greeted at the finish with their medal and other rewards.

PHOTOS & RESULTS:
Photos and results will be available via the website as soon as possible after the race.

PRESENTATIONS & PRIZES:
Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place men & women will be awarded on the main stage post race.
In accordance with UK Athletics Rules ALL PRIZES will be awarded based on Gun Finish Time.

Our shuttle bus service will depart the city centre from the main bus terminal Stand 12 between 7am and 7:45am. Buses drop off at the Red House Hotel Bus Stop and will start running return services from the Red House Hotel Bus Stop from 11:15am or once the first bus is full.

Great race! really well organised. Wasnt expecting the hills, and the last 3 miles were tough! More toilets along the route were needed.
