Midnight Mountain Marathon

Sat 1st June 2024

Two people run up a grassy hillside with a large, shadowed mountain in the background, partly illuminated by the setting sun. The sky is overcast, creating a dramatic, serene atmosphere. Silhouette of a person hiking up a hill at night, with a bright, blue-tinged light casting a glow behind them, creating a striking contrast against the dark sky. A man wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts is hiking uphill on a rocky path with a large camouflage backpack. The grassy landscape stretches out behind him under a cloudy sky. He looks determined and focused as he ascends. Two hikers traverse a rocky mountain trail. The foreground shows a woman in a yellow jacket and helmet, descending carefully. Another hiker, donning a black outfit, uses trekking poles to navigate uphill. Misty mountains loom in the background under a cloudy sky. Two men trail running on a grassy mountain path, one wearing a blue shirt and red backpack, the other in a white shirt and yellow vest. A large, steep mountain with a flat top looms in the background, under an overcast sky. Four runners in athletic outfits, including bright tops and arm warmers, are jogging on a rocky path during sunset. The sky is filled with clouds, creating a dramatic and serene backdrop as they head towards the horizon.

Can't comment on the race at all. I was unable to attend so I contacted their email address + via whatsapp. There has been no response at all. So from a customer support point of view this isn't great.

Very tough course. You need to be super-fit to do it. Generally well organised. However, I thought it would be safer to have someone strolling along after the stragglers to check that no-one was in difficulty (they did have a sweeper-up, but that was later). Also, the little green flags and arrows that marked the course were easy to miss, especially after dark. How about an LED light on each one - could make a big different to someone wandering off down the wrong side of a mountain in the dark, or getting back safe? I almost missed one in the dark, but fortunately someone else called me back. I did also wonder how much use the medical station at the top of Pen-y-Fan was. Anybody with anything more than the most minor problem would not be able to get to the top of Pen-y-Fan. Having it lower down Pen-y-Fan would have been more helpful to anyone in trouble, I would have thought. If you're going to do it, make sure you do proper training (like I didn't), and have your head-light (NB: get a good quality, very bright one) and gloves (my hands got cold) where you can easily access them. Carry at least 800ml of water, and some energy foods, and all the other things required, of course (you'll be sent a list). Otherwise, you could always do the half-marathon.

Brilliant. The marshals were fantastic, friendly and so supportive. Clear instructions and safety brief. The course was signposted with great views and challenging parts. I cannot walk straight today but it was absolutely worth it. Completed the weighted HM and can’t wait to go for the full one next year!
