Rough Runner Scotland (Saturday)
Created by runners. Inspired by game shows. Made for everyone. Rough Runner is a combination of distance running and epic obstacles, and is returning to the stunning Penicuik Estate, with its immense terrain providing a host of natural obstacles and breathtaking views of the Scottish Lowlands.
Take on our sweeper arm, 40m water slide, legendary travelator, and we also have epic new obstacles and challenges planned for you! Our event will be the closest thing you’ll find to doing Wipeout, Ninja Warrior, Gladiators and Takeshi’s Castle rolled into one. 100,000 Roughians to date have had the pleasure. A distance to suit your fitness – 5k, 10k or 15k routes available.
Roughian Rascals is also back, but bigger and better, with wet obstacles for the kids! This is a 1 mile course designed specifically for adventure-seeking kids from 7 to 12 years old.

Free access to the event for all spectators (except parking costs if driving separately)
A traffic management system will be in operation with AA road signs in place showing where to go.
There’s loads of space to park; we charge £8 per vehicle (cash only) for this event. If you can, try to car share – it'll save petrol, money, and the planet.
By road: Penicuik House is located 10 miles South of Edinburgh, between the A701 and the A702, off the A766 which joins the two roads. For most, driving will be the best means of getting there, so get some buddies together and road trip it! Use postcode EH26 9LA for your Satnav.
By train: Edinburgh Waverley is the second busiest station in Scotland, after Glasgow, and trains run into Edinburgh Waverley from destinations across Scotland and England, as far afield as Plymouth. There are direct buses to Penicuik from Edinburgh bus station - which is a short walk to the train station - which take about an hour.
Minimum age for participants in the 5k, 10k and 15k events is 16 yrs
Start times will be from 9.30-10am through to approx 2-3pm, subject to numbers of participants. We will advise you of your start time about 7 - 10 days prior to the event date.
Please arrive on site around 1 hour prior to your start time, to get yourself registered, set up and ready to run!
Things you'll need to bring:
- A print out of your ticket, a signed waiver (here), and photo ID. You can’t race without!
- Cash for food and drinks on site - card payment machines out in the countryside can be temperamental. Car parking is £8 cash on the day.
- Suitable clothing. This is up to you, but we'd suggest a warm change of clothes for after the event and gloves to use during (for all those nets and ropes). You will get muddy, and so will your trainers, so don't wear anything you are particularly precious about!
First-hand event reviews from people who’ve been there, done that and got the breathable T-shirt, really help everyone choose their next event.
Write a review and you’ll be entered into a monthly draw to win £500 worth of kit from Pro:Direct Running.
