Surrey Bacchus Marathon, Half Marathon & 10k

Dorking, Surrey

Denbies Wine Estate, Bradley Lane, Dorking, UK

Sun 12th September 2021

Organiser's Description

Set in the stunning surroundings of Denbies Vineyard near Dorking, the Bacchus Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k have rapidly become must-do events on the UK running calendar. Most of the field turn out in fancy dress and there are numerous bands playing around the course, but it's the drinks station on route that separate Bacchus from other running races and epitomise the spirit of the event.

You will have the chance to sample six fabulous English wines at drinks stations along the course, with two wines served at the last station and food and soft drinks to accompany them. If you are running the marathon you go around twice, which means 12 wines!

And there's more food and drink waiting for you at the finish at the post-race hog roast, where the party carries on long into the evening. There's also a children's 3k Fun Run, which is free to enter.

Please follow the marshals instructions when parking. Any randomly parked cars that block exit or entry routes into or out of the car park will be towed away.
There is ample space in the car park for all competitors. Please use the designated event car park and do not park in other areas of the Denbies complex which is reserved for Denbies general customers on the day. The event car park is a short walk to race registration and number pick up area, which itself is close to the race start.
When leaving the car park after your run, signs and marshals will direct you on to a one way system to leave the vineyard. Please follow the instructions of the marshals and do not try to leave by any other route.

Course Route

Marathon

Marathon runners complete two laps of the course. All marathon runners start in the first wave which goes off at 9.30am. Marathon runners will visit each drinks station twice and therefore will pass 10 stations throughout the marathon.
You need to be capable of running a five-and-a-half hour marathon to consider entering the Bacchus Marathon. There is a strict half-way cut-off of 2 hours 50 minutes on the first lap for all marathon runners.
Any marathon runner who completes the first lap after this time will be asked to finish and will receive a half-marathon medal. We can not guarantee medical, marshal or drinks station support to any runners who continue on the course after this time.

Half Marathon

Half Marathon runners complete one lap of the course and will visit five drinks stations along the route, the last station is a double station serving two wines. There are five Half Marathon waves with a maximum, of 400 runners in each.

Bacchus 10K

Returning for a second year, the 10K is aimed at those who want to experience the spirit of Bacchus without the exertions of the half-marathon course.
The 10K has two waves, of up to 400 runners starting at 11am and 11.15am. It leaves from the same start, runs up through the vineyard and visits the first and last drinks stations on the half marathon course, before returning to the finish. 10K runners will have the chance to sample three wines at the two stations.
Entry to the 10K includes race timing, free race photographs and a ticket to the post race hog-roast but does not include the event T-shirt, which can be purchased for £10 in advance or £15 on the day. The 10K is aimed primarily at adults but anyone under the age of 18 can take part.
Those under 18 will receive a specially marked number and will be served soft drinks at the aid station and at the finish.

Registration and Race Pack Pick-Up

Numbers will be available for pick up on the morning of the race from 8.15am onwards. The registration will be in the large marquee to the right of Denbies main building, which will also host the hog roast. Your personal number and the wave you selected when entering, will be communicated to you by e-mail at the end of August 2020. You need to know both to pick up your number. Your timing chip is a disposable tag which ties into your shoe laces and will be in the same envelope as your number.
Please arrive at least an hour before your intended start to give you time to collect your number on the morning. Your race number will have a number of detachable elements and can be exchanged for food and drink at the hog roast and your race T-shirt, which will be distributed at the finish after you have received your medal.
10K runners who ordered a T-shirt in advance can collect the T-shirt from the registration tent beside the information point. Marathon and Half Marathon runners have a T-shirt token printed on their numbers, which can be exchanged for their T-shirt after crossing the finish line.
The T-shirt is available in six sizes and have the following size chest equivalents XS (34 and below),S (34-36") M (38-40") L (40-42") XL (42-44") XXL (44" and above).
You will be given the T-shirt size that you ordered. We place orders according to those sizes so we will not be able to exchange the size you ordered on the day for a different size.
There will a limited number of additional T-shirts available for purchase on race day for £15. We can't promise we will have all sizes.

Secured baggage

There is a secured baggage area behind Denbies main building and can be reached by walking through the registration tent on the way to the start. The baggage area is manned at all times. There will be a tear-off baggage tag on the bottom of your race number. The tag number matches your race number. Attach the tag to any baggage you wish to leave. The baggage area will be open from 8.30am and will remain open until the last bag is collected.
Please ensure that any bag you leave is correctly tagged, we will only release the bag to a person with a race number that matches the baggage tag. We will not accept bags for drop off without a numbered tag.

Prizes

Bacchus Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K are primarily fun runs and we want you to take your time to enjoy the wine and the scenery.
The event is chip timed and we publish results after the event, but we do not award prizes to the fastest finishers in any of the races.
We do, however, award bottles of Denbies English wine for the best fancy dress costumes we see on the day. The best fancy dress competition is judged by our finish line team and the prizes are awarded at the finish line. It is a light-hearted competition and no discussion will be entered into about the decisions they make. Those decisions are entirely subjective.

Toilets

There will be plenty of portable toilets in the start/finish area in the main event car park and after registration on the route to the start. There are additional men's and women's toilets inside Denbies main building. There will also be portable toilets at two locations out on the course at the car park off the Ranmore Road and at the final drinks station.

Headphones & Dogs

Although the race route crosses one public highway, the route itself does not run on the public highway. We do not ban headphones, although we advise against running in them and if you decide to use them, you do so at your own risk. Likewise you can run with a dog, although we don't recommend it and any dog needs to be kept on a leash at all times.

  • Dogs are not allowed inside Denbies main building.

Food & Drink

Whoever suggested that running and drink don't mix, has never run the Bacchus. With five wine stations to visit on each lap and six wines to sample, the Bacchus races are definitely events to take your time over. The main events are timed but few runners worry too much about the speed it takes to cover the distance. That said we insist that those signing up for the marathon need to be capable of running the distance in under five and a half hours - there is a two-hour-fifty-minute cut-off on the first lap for those going out a second time to complete the marathon - which still leaves plenty of time to enjoy the wine, food and entertainment along the way.
Each of the sampling stations will have a different wine to taste, all of them grown and produced on site at Denbies. The last station is a double station and will have two wines to sample. The wines will be a mix of reds and whites and will showcase some of Denbies award-winning English wines including one of the sparkling wines on which the vineyard has forged its formidable reputation.
We should emphasise that the wine served is a tasting sample and we would ask that you take only one glass per station to ensure that everyone has the chance to try the wines. There will be a wine marshal at each station who will be responsible for dispensing and controlling the distribution of the wine.

You'll be able to able to enjoy a further complimentary glass of wine, beer or soft drink at the finish with the hog roast. Additional drinks will be available to purchase. As well as the wine, we will have water available at all of the drinks stations and the finish with High5 energy drink at one other drinks station.
To accompany the wine, we will be serving small food snacks at four of the drinks stations. The other station, which will be around nine miles, will be designated as an 'energy' station. Although it will still be serving wine, it will also have High5 energy bars and gels.

Don't forget that in addition to the food and drink, there will be some form of musical entertainment at each drinks station. At the last running that was a mix of local cover bands, a steel-drum band, a choir and a Scottish Piper. That was in addition to the DJ at the start/finish area who keep the party going at the post-race hog roast long into the evening.
