Organiser's Description

Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon in English, is the highest mountain in Eryri (Snowdonia), and also the whole of England and Wales. It peaks at an impressive 1,085 m (3,560 feet).

Starting and finishing at the foot of this iconic mountain, you will be challenged as an individual, or part of a team, to ascend and descend Snowdon as many times as possible in 24 hours.

Being UTMB Indexed, this is also a great qualifying or preparation race for UTMB Mont Blanc. The individual challenges mean that there is a 50k, 100k and 100m mile UTMB indexed challenge.

Categories for solo runners, pair relay and team (up to 5) relay. Pair and team entries receive one timing chip, meaning only one person will be running at one time.

Course Details

Based in Llanberis village the route will take you up and down the Llanberis Path; a 15km out and back route taking you past the legendary Half Way House, Allt Moses, Clogwyn Bridge and ultimately on to the summit before heading back down to the event village, some much-needed refreshments, and another lap!

Parking

Event parking is available 1 mile from the event village for a £10 fee, donated to to local community groups and charities. You may drop kit off at the Respite Area before proceeding to park. Pleas be aware that parking in Llanberis village is a very sensitive issue, and avoid parking in resedential areas for the duration of the race.

  • Minimum Age

    You must be at least 18 years old to take part in this race

  • Registration

    You will need attend registration which will take place on Saturday morning before the race - we will confirm specific times in your Final Instructions, which will be available on the website and via email 10 days prior to the race. Registration is usually located in Llanberis, on the field situated next to the Community Centre - LL55 4UR.

  • Start Time

    The event is likely to begin at 10am on the Saturday, finishing at 10am on the Sunday. Confirmed timings will be detailed in your Final Instructions which will be available on the website and via email 10 days prior to your race. The start line is on the Llanberis Event Field LL55 4UR.

  • Qualifying Laps

    The challenge is to complete as many laps as possible within the 24-hour period. A lap is both the ascent and descent of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). The winners of the event will be the athletes who complete as many of these as possible. If a runner begins a lap but does not complete it within the 24-hour period, it will NOT count towards the total for that runner or team. In the event of a tiebreak on the number of laps, the quickest will win! You will not be allowed to go out on your final lap after 10:00am. We would not expect anyone to be leaving for their last lap after 08:30am. The Finish Line will open from 08:45. If you wish to finish before this time, you will need to hand in your timing chip to the staff at the Lap Turn Around Point.

  • Feed Stations

    There are no aid stations out on the course. The following are available for participants: Lap point - Fruit, crisps, sweets, coke & HIGH5 electrolyte drink & gels. Solo Participant Chill Out Zone - Fruit, crisps, sweets, coke and additional savoury options. Please bring your own reusable plate or bowl for the savoury options. Respite Area - Hot water will be available to rehydrate dried food packs or make tea & coffee. On-Site 24-Hour Vendor - A selection of local food vendors will be available in the event village (close to the lap point) to provide additional options for participants and spectators. At least one vendor will be open at any point in the 24hr race.

  • Rest Areas

    There will be a communal chill-out zone for solo participants and a respite area for all participants, in two separate locations. Solo competitors will be given space to leave kit and rest in a communal chill-out zone in the Event Village. If solo competitors wish to have a space to pitch their own shelter, they will be given a space in the respite area, 500m away from the Event Village - max dimensions 1.5m x 2.5m (2-person tent) Pairs will be given space to pitch a maximum of one shelter per pair in the respite area, 500m away from the Event Village - max dimensions 1.5m x 2.5m (2-person tent) Teams will be given space to pitch a maximum of two shelters per team in the respite area, 500m away from the Event Village - max dimensions 3m x 3.5m (3-person tent) You will be required to provide your own shelter. Shelters can include tents, bivvies etc. Provision for caravans and camper vans will not be included but can be found locally at the cost of the participant. Vehicles will not be allowed in the respite area. The respite area is located close to residential areas. It will be a SILENT zone at all times, with NO MUSIC or noise at all between the hours of 9pm and 8am. Security will be on-site policing this. Athletes must be respectful of other participants and local residents. Absolutely no campfires or cooking/stoves will be allowed in the respite area or inside the communal chill-out zone. Use of any such devices will result in immediate disqualification from the event. There will be changing and basic kitchen facilities available in the Respite Area. The Respite Area will only be available from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon. Staying on Friday or Sunday nights is not permitted by the local authority. Please keep an eye on this page for any updates. Confirmed details will be outlined in your Final Instructions which will be available on the website and via email 10 days prior to the race.

How It Works

The challenge is to complete as many ascents and descents of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) as possible within the 24-hour period. The race winners will be the athletes who complete as many of these as possible.

If a runner begins a lap but does not complete it within the 24-hour period, it will NOT count towards the total for that runner or team. In the event of a tiebreak on the number of ascents and descents, the fastest will win!

To add to the excitement and motivation individuals, pairs and teams can set the goal of achieving one of the following awards. Awards will take the shape of a unique local slate that marks the highest level achieved.

3 times ascend and descend – Snowdon Triple Award
5 times ascend and descend – Mont Blanc Award
7 times ascend and descend – Kilimanjaro Award
10 times ascend and descend – the ultimate Everest Award!

A UTMB INDEX EVENT

Mandatory to enter the UTMB Mont-Blanc lottery, a valid UTMB Index is achieved by completing at least one race of the UTMB World Series or a UTMB Index race in the relevant category within the previous 24 months.

Snowdon24 offers 50k, two 100k and 100-mile UTMB classification challenges, which will be submitted for UTMB indexing for all solo participants.

Compulsory kit

All competitors must carry the compulsory kit listed below. This kit is for your safety due to the often unpredictable and quickly changing mountain conditions and isolated nature of the route.

Spot checks will be in place and anybody found without the required kit will not be allowed to race.

Waterproof whole body cover (jacket & trousers) - with taped seams and integrated, attached hood.
Suitable off-road running shoes - fell/trail shoes
Hat and Gloves (head and hand cover)
Whistle
Emergency food (Minimum 750 calories, the equivalent of approximately 4 HIGH5 Energy bars)
Foil blanket
Drinking water
Mobile telephone
You must carry a head torch with sufficient battery life throughout the race, it must be worn/switched on between the hours of 10pm-5am

We hold a prize-giving ceremony after the racing, at approximately 11am. Exact timings will be detailed in the Final Instructions, however, it is a good idea to listen out for any updates that come in over the tannoy; sometimes the ceremony may be delayed and we wouldn't want you to miss out. We don't send out prizes after the event, so make sure you attend the ceremony and receive your big Welsh cheer!
