EXERCISE & RACES - FAQ'S FOR RESTRICTIONS IN TIER 4 AND TIERS 3-1

Here’s what we know right now, what we are doing to try and help, and what you can do:

How do I find out more about the status and/or contingency plan for a Race that I have already booked through findarace.com?

If you booked place in an event via findarace.com please refer to your original Booking Confirmation Email for the Race Organiser’s contact email address. Please contact them direct via that email address. They are best placed to answer your queries.

Can I go for a run or a ride in Tier 4?

Yes, in Tier 4 in England you can go for a run or ride while observing specific conditions and social distancing, and only with people "within your household, support bubble, or with one person from another household".

Excerpt from latest UK Governement guidance on Exercise and Recreation in Tier 4: "People can also exercise outdoors or visit some public outdoor places, such as parks, the countryside accessible to the public, public gardens or outdoor sports facilities. You can continue to do unlimited exercise alone, or in a public outdoor place with your household, support bubble, or one other person."

Some advice from us at findarace: Run in open spaces and quiet spaces. Go steady - now is not the time for extreme exertion. Choose sensible terrain and only run after dark with a headtorch or in well lit areas - now is not the time to burden the NHS with a sprained ankle! Do not run if you are unwell or are in an at-risk group. The Official advice to date has acknowledged that there are physical and mental wellbeing benefits of exercising outside once a day, but please follow the guidance above to ensure we are all able to do this safely and for as long as possible.

Can I go for a run or a ride in Tiers 3,2 and 1?

Yes, in Tiers 3,2, and 1 in England "you can continue to do unlimited exercise alone, or in an outdoor public place in groups up to 6."

Can Races take place in Tier 4?

No. In Tier 4, in England:

  • Organised outdoor and indoor sport for over-18s is not permitted.
  • Competition licences within Tier 4 areas are suspended.
  • See the England Athletics website for full details.
  • We are waiting for the guidance for the rest of the UK and will update this page when we have it.

Can Races take place in Tiers 3, 2 and 1?

Yes. In Tiers 3,2, and 1 in England, the UK Government advice is: "In line with guidance from sporting national governing bodies, you can take part in organised sport and physical activity outdoors with any number of people". So:

  • Races that adhere to governement guidance are permitted.
  • See the England Athletics website for full details.
  • We are waiting for the guidance for the rest of the UK and will update this page when we have it.

Will races be postponed/cancelled/banned?

Yes. In the short term Races due to take place until the next review of restrictions (30th December) are likely to be postponed, cancelled, or turned in Virtual Runs - and we are identifying those races now and will be pausing bookings on them until the situation becomes clearer.

We will also be working hard to update the site as we learn of postponements and cancellations, but this is a work-in-progress: please bear with us and check back frequently.

How do I find out more about a race that I have already booked through findarace.com?

If you booked place in an event via findarace.com please refer to your original booking confirmation email for the Race Organiser’s contact email address. They will be able to advise you on any queries regarding cancellation, postponement, transfers, etc. If you booked with your credit card you may have an additional layer of refund/cancellation protection - check with your provider. Most Race Organisers are likely to offer transfers/deferrals or a Virtual Run rather than cash refunds.

The vast majority of Race Organisers are small businesses who will take a big hit to their income as a result of Coronavirus, not to mention the stress and work involved in rescheduling events. Please bear with them - and support them - we want them to survive this so that we all have lots of great races to take part in in the future. We trust that they will do everything they can to make sure you get that amazing race day experience when it is safe to do so.

What are my options if my original race has already been postponed or cancelled?

If you have had your event cancelled/postponed but have already put the training in and want a goal (and a medal) then you can browse findarace.com for a smaller replacement event or enter our January 2021 Virtual Challenge.

If you haven’t yet booked a place in an event but still want to do so then we suggest you consider Races later in the year, eg Summer/Autumn 2020.

How long will this last?

Many Races and Race Organisers are planning for postponed 2020 events to take place in Summer and Autumn 2021, although areas in Tiers 3, 2 and 1 can continue to hold Races under the current restrictions as long as they follow their National Governing Body's covid-safe guidance.

We remain committed to supporting the Participants and Race Organisers that make findarace.com what it is - the UK's best and most popular Race Discovery Marketplace.

Stay safe :-)
