Organiser's Description

Taking THE ROC into the Lake District, this is an opportunity to test your resolve and focus in one of the most inspiring locations in Europe. From the swim in Windermere, the bike past the iconic Coniston Water and to the summit of England’s highest mountain and back, THE ROC ENGLAND is a race you will thrive on if you love tough rewarding challenges.

Commencing on the compelling Lakeside shoreline, THE ROC England starts with a 1.5km swim in the captivating waters of Windermere before heading off on a 45.5km bike route full of dramatic, exhilarating sections and plenty of hills before reaching Stool End Farm at the foot of the Langdale Pikes. The race then heads off on foot via Mickleden up England’s highest and most prominent mountain with over 3,000 feet of formidable assent to the summit of Scafell Pike and a 17.5km total round route up and down. The race continues on bike back to Lakeside ending with a 1km trail run to the finish line by Windermere.

Course Details

111km and 3,209ft elevation with a total ascent of 6,916ft. A totally unique race from Windermere to the top of England’s highest mountain and back again.
There’s no other endurance triathlon like it. Lake swim, 2 transitions 45km apart. 5 stages and Englands’ highest mountain.

SWIM | BIKE | MOUNTAIN | BIKE | RUN

SWIM COURSE (1,500 meters)
Starts on the grass running into the lake for a teardrop course heading north along the shoreline to the next bay infront of Lakeside HQ before rounding 3 buoys to swim back again parallel to the shore, rounding the last buoy before heading in to the shore and running up the slip ramp onto the grass. 200 meters run through to transition.

BIKE COURSE (45.5 Kilometers – Out)
A superb exhilarating course with plenty of long fast sections and some exciting technical sections thrown in too.

SCAFELL PIKE MOUNTAIN (8.75 Kilometers each way)
Arguably the most inspiring trail routes up this most famous mountain. It’s a challenging route with a full mix of terrains; some steep, some fast and exhilarating and a few technical sections. A captivating mountain run that will keep your focus and drive stoked right up to the summit before the fast & furious run back down. N.B. You will need to pass the Esk Hause Check Point 6km up Scafell Pike before 12:30pm to be able to progress to the summit.

BIKE COURSE (45.5 Kilometers – Back)
Some great long stretches of open picturesque roads with plenty hills and technical sections thrown in too. It’s a memorable route back to the finish.

FINAL TRAIL RUN (1 Kilometer)
The finish adds that final challenge with a 1km trail run through the Lakeside forest and back round to see you home in style over the finish line.

How to Get There

By Car- The southern Lake District is conveniently linked to the M6 motorway. To find Lakeside, leave the M6 at Junction 36 and follow the A590 which is sign-posted Barrow-in- Furness.

Approximately 18 miles after leaving the motorway you will reach the Newby Bridge roundabout. Continue through the roundabout on the A590 and turn first right over a bridge and past the Swan Hotel. Lakeside is sign-posted three and a half miles along this road on the right. The Main entrance is based at North Camp which is the second turning after South Camp.

By Rail- South Lakeland is linked to all mainline services. The nearest station is at Grange-Over-Sands which is connected with the stations of Lancaster and Carnforth on the West Coast Line making it an easy destination from London, Scotland, or continental Europe.

It is also possible to reach Lakeside from the east of Britain by taking the picturesque Leeds to Lancaster line that also connects at Carnforth. From Grange-Over-Sands station, road transport to Lakeside is required.

Parking

Parking is available at the Stoller Campus, free of charge.

Location

THE ROC England starts and finishes in the grounds of the YMCA Lakeside, a purpose built state-of-the-art outdoors centre. With multiple accommodation options, plus the location of race registration and after-race activities including prize giving, we would recommend staying at the Stoller campus.

TERMS & CONDITIONS All entrants must abide by the race T&C’s. These can be read during the entry process or you can

RACE PACKS You will receive the Digital Race Pack 4 weeks in advance of the race and then another version with any final tweaks for race day 1 week before the race. These are only sent out via email containing all the information & instructions you need in preparation for race day. It includes details of where to register and to collect your race bibs, timing tags, transitions etc.
Registration is on the evening prior to the race. If for some reason you won’t be able to arrive until race morning then you will need to book in an emergency registration slot.

WATER TEMPERATURE Wearing of wetsuits for the swim discipline will be mandatory. British Triathlon Federation rules will be abide by which could result in a shortened swim course or removal of the swim altogether if temperatures dictate. If removed altogether a 3km trail run will be added to the start of the race.

TRANSITIONS T1 & T4 is positioned a short distance from the start line, race control and the car park. T2 & T3 is positioned at Stool End Farm just past Dungeon Ghyll and at the foot of the Langdale Pikes. During registration you will be given a drawstring bag which you must put your Mountain Kit in for the Scafell Pike leg of the race. This should be in a Trail Running bag or lightweight rucksack and include the following items:
Full waterproof body cover of hooded jacket and trousers (we recommend with taped seams)
Hat/buff
gloves
Water bottle / carrier
High Energy Snacks
Foil Blanket
High Factor Sun Cream
Whistle

Outside your Mountain Kit Bag (but in the drawstring bag):
Appropriate running/trail shoes
Change of clothes (optional)

Your drawstring bag will then be secured overnight and taken to T2 at Stool End Farm where it will be ready for you once you have racked your bike & removed your helmet and shoes.

The drawstring bag will be inside the changing marquee right next to T2. This will allow you to change undercover but does not provide total privacy!

Once you have removed your items from your bag and are ready to set off, you hang your bag back onto your numbered race peg.

When returning you will collect your bag again to put your Mountain Kit Bag in and any other items you don’t want to take on the bike and put back on your numbered peg.

PRIZES There is £1,000 in prize money for THE ROC England and a prestigious trophy to first man & first woman. .

MEDALS & SUSTENANCE Bespoke ROC race medals, water & items like banana’s & chocolate bars will be given to all ROC finishers. Additional water points at the half way point on the return bike course and at T2/T3 along with additional cakes & banana’s. There is emergency water at the 6km and summit checkpoints on Scafell Pike.

TIMING All triathletes will be provided with an ankle tag timing chip, This will record your individual time complete with Scafell Pike Summit time & transition times for both Lakeside & Stool End Farm transition areas.

RESULTS Full results will be available shortly after completion of the race. .

THE START The start is at YMCA lakeside, on the lawn in front of Stoller Campus ).

race rules

UK Race triathlons are governed by the British Triathlon Federation. All entrants are required to abide by all applicable British Triathlon rules and regulations.

Competitors must be 18 or over to enter and take part in The ROC

Wearing of wetsuits for the swim discipline will be mandatory.

Swim distances are determined by the lake temperature using BTF rules. Should the lake temperature be below 11 degrees then a 3km trail run will replace the swim.

This is a no drafting event.

A cut off time will be in force at the Esk Hause Check Point 6km up Scafell Pike.

Any competitor who does not reach this point by 12 NOON will be instructed not
to head to the summit but to turn around and complete the course from there.

Race officials will be advised and you will receive a different medal when you cross the finish line.

Unless you are an affiliated member of the British Triathlon Federation you must purchase a Day License Membership at registration. This provides you with third party liability insurance. It’s valid on the day of your competition and cannot be transferred. Please be prepared to pay £5 for your membership at registration.

Triathletes will not hold the race organiser responsible for any injury or loss

Registrants understand that the final decision for the commencement of the race to go ahead on the day is that of the race organisers “Sensation Group” only.

Event organisers are able to amend the course route at any time and without prior notification.
