The Wild Night Run 10 mile & 5 mile

South Brent Village Hall, South Brent, Devon. TQ10 6PJ

Organiser's Description

The South West’s toughest night race - ten tough, muddy, rocky, boggy miles on Dartmoor. The first five miles are mainly uphill, following the river to Shipley Bridge, with one or two brief descents to give you some respite. There's then a slightly uphill tarmac section, before you get out onto Dartmoor - blizzards, nearly waist deep bogs – you’ll find it all here. The second half is mainly downhill, with a couple of short sharp climbs to keep you on your toes, including the notorious and very muddy Brent Hill. This is a tough race and not for the faint-hearted.

The 5 mile option is still wild and follows the stunning river path from South Brent to Shipley Bridge. It then loops round to descend a steep rocky track (care needed) before rejoining the river path. Still challenging but aimed at less experienced runners.

Well organised and fun

Despite the inevitable route change, this was a great event - well-organised, friendly, suitably tough! Will definitely go again.

Unfortunate circumstances

On arrival at the check-in, we were notified that the route had been changed due to land owner issues and it would be 2 laps of the 5 mile route (lots of road) instead of the 10 mile, moorland run which was planned.

I'm assured by those that have been there before that the 10 mile route is fantastic so I'd definitely go back to get on that route.

My only criticism is that it would have been better for the organisers to contact everyone (social media) and explain the situation and offer a transfer to another race. Like a lot of people, I'm not a fan of lap type events, and much prefer out and back or loops.

Genuinely gutted.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your feedback.
Unfortunately the situation only arose on the day of the race (after lunch), so there was no time to inform people of the change before registration.
Instead we had to focus on taking down the signs, contacting marshals and rearranging the course. Our fall back weather option is to do two laps of the Mild Night Run, which is not an easy course by any standards but has proportionally more tarmac than the longer route.
We do appreciate that the enforced change, which came about as a result of a landowner removing our signs and refusing access to his land, must have come as some disappointment, especially if you wanted to do the original route, which is a popular route. In the end, our decision was the only one which would have ensured the safety and well being of participants.
Kind regards
