Organiser's Description

Online bookings are now closed. Please see the Relish Running website for details of places available on the day.

Cheddar Gorge 10km - #thefastest10km in the country!
This is a fully closed roads event. The route starts with a gentle fall and rise, just to warm you up, as we line you up with the top of Cheddar Gorge. With the right turn that comes at 2.5km, you are now at the very top of Cheddar Gorge and on a 7.5km long downhill run to the finish. On the 7.5km downhill section you will drop 150m+ of elevation making this #thefastest10km in the country!

We are super excited to be organising the very first closed roads running race through the iconic Cheddar Gorge. Runners will get to soak in the amazing views of the 450ft high cliffs on roads which are usually dominated by cars. This is a unique opportunity to appreciate the wonder of the gorge and run a rather fast time too!

information to note

Whilst there is no formal cut off, runners should be aiming to finish the event in no more than 90mins and 3hrs15mins for the half marathon, so you have time to enjoy your race experience before we need to reopen the roads. The event is open to buggy runners - please note the steepest part of the route is -17% so you need to strap your little one in tight! We strongly recommend that buggy runners start at the back of their wave so they have more space. The event is not open to canicross runners or walkers (mix of run, jog, walk is absolutely fine!) Minimum age to take part is 12 for the 5km, 15 for the 10km and 17 for the half marathon.

  • This event will not be included on UK Athletics' database list of official PBs as they don't recognise events with such a large elevation drop in their rankings.

on the day

The road which we are starting the event on is a single carriage width and relatively short, so we will therefore be setting runners off in waves. Waves will be up to 500 runners in size.

Times are subject to final confirmation

Great event, good route, well organised and staffed, and a good time! Waaaay too expensive though for a wooden medal and ultimately just a 10k (considering the Nello cycle in Exeter costs £40 for 100miles with multiple fully catered stops) but if that doesn’t matter to you and running satisfaction is more important, then you’ll love it!
Really pleased you enjoyed your run :-) We spend the same on our large 10cm x 10cm wooden medals, full colour on both sides, as we did on our smaller metal medals of a few years ago. We made the decision to go for a more eco option as we value being as environmentally friendly as possible I think you're comparing apples and oranges here. The Cheddar Road race run is fully closed roads event which comes with costs in the very high 4 figures, a cycle sportive simply doesn't have these costs. The entry fee goes towards ensuring your safety and maximising your enjoyment, without the expense of the closed roads, it simply wouldn't be safe or possible to hold the event. We hope you enjoyed our post race snack selection; mini cheddars, fizzy drinks, tribe bars and a selection of other treats at the finish line which were also along the race route at 5km intervals.

There was very heavy rain during the couple of hours preceding the run, so a huge thanks to the organisers, volunteers and marshals for getting everything ready for us in the event village and out on the course beforehand. Thankfully the rain stopped just before the start, which made for a more enjoyable run. It is certainly a memorable course, both in terms of the terrain (downhill for the final 7.5K!) and the stunning scenery in the Gorge towards the end. The provision of buses to get us back to the village was very welcome! Well done as ever to Relish Runners, who always organise innovative events.

I really enjoyed this race! It was well organised with parking at the bottom and a double decker bus ride to the top. Water stop at 6k, why plastic cups when promoting box water at end ? Also needs more toilets at start end as we were delayed by 15 minutes for everyone to get through! But apart from that it was amazing 🤩
Thank you Marina, so pleased you enjoyed the day :-) The cups aren't plastic, they are made of sustainably sourced plant starch. We felt it would be wasteful to give out a whole large box of water on such a cool day, so cups were a better fit. A few more loos already on order for next year, hope we will see you there!
