Organiser's Description

THE DARTMOOR VOLCANO RACE is a fully marked and marshaled 10.5-mile tour of the Southern Moor, with over 550 metres of ascent. Now in its ninth year.

It’s not a ‘walk in the park’, it’s the Dartmoor National Park, and the race visits the high points of Pupers Hill, Snowdon, and South Dartmoor’s highest point – Ryders Hill. And of course the infamous Red Lake Volcano!

The date for the 2024 Dartmoor Volcano race is Saturday 7th September. We are going for another Saturday event after a successful 2023.. Usual anti- clockwise route!

The race starts and finishes in the village of Scoriton, (TQ110JB) on the edge of Dartmoor. 4 miles from the A38, Buckfastleigh/Ashburton junction.

Race includes:-

3 river crossings
1 Clapper Bridge crossing
2 Bogs
1 Volcano ascent
1 long uphill start
1 long downhill finish

How to Get There

‘Volcano race’ event signage will be added to existing signs to Scoriton. The best direction is from the A38 at Dartbridge, through Buckfast, up the hill past Buckfast Abbey (on the right), to the brow of the hill and turn right signed for Scorriton (approximately 2 miles). Continue straight on for 1 1/2 miles and when you see a granite cross next to a tree on the left, continue past another 20 metres and turn left, also signed for Scorriton, the field is 300 metres on your left and our own signs and marshals will guide you to the car park in a field. Again, signs and marshals will point the way for you.

Parking

Free parking will be from 09:00 in a field approximately 400m from the hall.

Location

Race HQ is at the Village Hall, Scoriton. Just 4 miles off the A38 Buckfastleigh Junction.

on the day

There will be soft drinks, coffees, teas and a selection of cakes available to purchase throughout the day from the hall but a limited service will be available from Race Briefing until 12 (the first hour of the race).

Event t-shirts will be for sale in the hall for those who have not already ordered theirs online. OuterEdge Technical running t-shirts and Hoodies.

Supporters should keep their dogs on a lead at all times but you must realise the route goes out onto the Moor and has extremely limited vantage points unless you walk a few miles from the start line.

No dogs are allowed to run with their owner in the races due to UK Athletics rules and their Public Liability Insurance, which differs to Park Runs.

  • PLEASE NOTE.. at the finish, NO SHOES used for the race should be worn inside the hall or left in a pile outside the entrance door for people to trip over! Unfortunately, there are no changing rooms at the hall so your car will have to suffice. Bring plenty of options for what the weather and course throw at you!

mandatory kit

Dartmoor has changeable weather conditions at any time of the year. So be prepared!

Because it’s Dartmoor and we are sending you out to a remote area where vehicles have limited access, the Mandatory kit is the same as in previous years.

Trail Running shoes
Backpack or waistpack
Whistle
Foil/Survival blanket
Waterproof jacket
Headcover (cap/buff)
Mobile phone with emergency number stored (numbers below)
Capacity to carry 250ml of liquid – we are cupless now so bring a collapsable cup or water bottle

We would also suggest you consider wearing leggings or a long sleeve top compared to what you would usually wear. You will encounter boggy, slippery conditions if we have had significant rainfall leading up to the event, and river levels will rise as a result. So wading up to the knee is a possibility at the River Avon crossing. Your feet are guaranteed to get wet even if the course is fairly dry! We have marshals on the course but you can quickly become cold when exposed on the Moor. So please come well-prepared for this race. There will be a quick kit-check at registration.

  • Qualified paramedics from Airside Medical will attend the event

participant info

REGISTRATION Timings to register, quick kit check, collect numbers, pre-paid t-shirts, safety pins, etc are 09:00 to 10:15am. Start Time 10.30am

AID STATION (1/2 mile down the tramway after Volcano) – 6.3 miles Drinks and a small selection of snacks

CUTOFFS In previous years, everyone has finished within 3 hours and we would like to think the same would happen this year. Marshals and sweepers will be monitoring runners to ensure their safety, but our intention will be to guide all runners to a finish.

  • Should anyone withdraw from the race you MUST report to a marshal who will assist you.
