Want to find Mud Runs near you? You're in the right place! The Mud Run craze is going from strength to strength, with organisers like Tough Mudder blazing a trail over the last decade. You can now find mud runs in London and all over the UK at pretty much any time of year. Distances vary - although wading through mud is obviously harder than road running so mud runs tend to be more 5k than half marathon distance. Some mud runs are suitable for kids. Many of them also include additional challenges so it would be more accurate to describe them as mud obstacle courses or mud assault courses.
If you want to have fun and raise money for a good cause then look out for Race for Life's "Pretty Muddy" Mud Run Series and other muddy races organised by other great charities.
If you like getting messy or a big challenge while doing you are racing then why not take a look at our list of Colour Runs or Obstacle Course Races. For a more straightforward run, don't forget our calendar of 5K and 10K races too.
Find A Race is the UK's most popular event listings website, with over 3 millions users a year using our database to discover, compare and book their next challenge.

What is a mud run, and how is it different from an obstacle race?
What is a mud run, and how is it different from an obstacle race?
A mud run is an off-road race where tackling muddy ground is part of the experience, but it doesn’t necessarily involve built obstacles. Some events, like Insane Terrain, sit between the two categories, combining mud with water, slides, bridges, and other obstacles. If it’s the walls, crawls and constructed challenges you’re after, have a look at our obstacle races.
Should I wear trousers or shorts for a mud run?
Should I wear trousers or shorts for a mud run?
Shorts will be fine if you’re doing the race in summer, but leggings or tight-fitting running trousers are usually the more practical choice if you’re expecting cold, wet or rough ground. They’re extremely comfortable, and they also give your legs some protection without getting in the way. Loose trousers are generally not a good idea. Prioritise your comfort when deciding what to wear and think about the time of year, too.
How much does it cost to enter a mud run?
How much does it cost to enter a mud run?
Prices can vary quite a bit by event and distance, typically ranging from £15 to £50, and they sometimes change as the event gets closer. Entering the Hartfield Honey Run, for example, costs £20 for the 10k and £30 for the half marathon.
Is a mud run harder than the same distance on a road?
Is a mud run harder than the same distance on a road?
Mud runs often feel much harder than road runs, which is to be expected when the ground moves around beneath you! If you still want to go off road but don’t fancy getting muddy, take a look at our trail runs. And remember, the ground isn’t the only thing that affects how hard a run feels. Slippery terrain makes it much harder to keep your footing, but so do hills. If you enter a race with both, you’re in for a real challenge.
Are mud runs only held in summer, or do they run through the winter?
Are mud runs only held in summer, or do they run through the winter?
Mud runs aren’t only held in summer. The current calendar includes the Hartfield Honey Run in mid November, so you can still find muddy racing well into autumn. What’s available changes throughout the year.
Are mud runs actually any good, or is it just a gimmick?
Are mud runs actually any good, or is it just a gimmick?
There’s enough positive finisher feedback to suggest the mud itself isn’t the only reason people come back. There are loads of reasons to love mud runs. The Hartfield Honey Run has plenty of positive reviews, with runners regularly mentioning the organisation, atmosphere and course as well as the conditions underfoot.
How do you get clean after a mud run, and what happens to your kit?
How do you get clean after a mud run, and what happens to your kit?
You’ll probably have to deal with your own dirty clothes after the event, unless otherwise specified. It’s definitely worth bringing a change of clothes, spare shoes, and a waterproof bag to keep your muddy kit in afterwards. Facilities at mud runs vary quite a bit: Insane Terrain provided a cold-water wash-down at its August event, while the upcoming Hartfield Honey Run offers a bag drop but doesn’t currently advertise wash-off or changing facilities. Check the race information before you leave home rather than counting on showers being available.
