How To Get There

The University is well signed from all directions into the city.

Train/bus: Our nearest train station is Bath Spa, from where buses run regularly to campus. There are frequent rail services from London, Bristol and South Wales to Bath Spa. There are also direct links from the North, with the journey from Leeds taking about 4 hours.

Walk/bike from the centre of Bath using: North Road / Bathwick Hill / Widcombe Hill. These routes involve a steep uphill climb. It will take 30 to 40 minutes to walk to campus.

Walk/bike from the East of Bath to campus using: Claverton Down Road / The Avenue / Claverton Hill (steep uphill climb).

There is secure bike storage on campus.

Event Information

Cut off

There is a cut off of 3hrs and 15mins for the marathon runners to complete the first 14.5 miles of the marathon, which takes them to the lap turn around point. After this time runners will have to complete the long half marathon course.

Waves

As there are some narrow sections, we will be starting the event in waves so everyone has a clear run. There will be waves of about 100 runners setting off at 5min or 10min intervals. All waves are open to all runners. Please confer with friends and family before you register to ensure you select the same wave if you wish to start together. The different start times are fully accounted for in the results so you can pick any wave and get an accurate finish time. Please see the below for a provisional schedule.

Safety Advice

There are a number of road crossings on the course. All these points will be marshalled. The marshals do not have the ability to stop the traffic. The final decision to cross the road is the sole responsibility of the runners.

The off road terrain is technical in places and the wearing of off road shoes is highly recommended.

Please make sure you are well hydrated before the race and during it.

Registration

Race registration is located by the University lake and amphitheatre, follow the Orange Registration or Pink to the Start arrows to find the field. The start line, finish line and registration are all within 50m of each other. Race registration will open at 08:45 and run until 10:15. There will be places on the day across all distances.

Course Marking

The course makes use of public footpaths and permissive rights of way. Please be mindful of others users and be careful when taking tight corners and under the canal bridges. The route is marked with fluorescent signs, Relish Running Races branded red and white barrier tape hanging as streamers from the trees, as well as orange temporary marking paint across grassland and chalked arrows on tarmac footpaths and surfaces.

There will also be large arrows where any routes split. Marshals will try and assist you, but ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure you are on the correct route for your race.

Take litter home with you

Please ensure you take home all rubbish with you - if you can run with a full jelly packet, you can run with an empty one up to the next feed station where you can drop it in one of our bins.

Feed Stations There is water available at the Feed Station mid way through the 10km race. There are 11 Feed Stations on the Marathon and 7 Feed Stations on the Half Marathon. There will be cups of water available BUT NO BOTTLED WATER THIS YEAR. There will be containers and jugs so you can refill your own hydration set ups. There will also be electrolyte drinks available in cups, plus orange slices, jaffa cakes, jelly beans, bananas, flapjack, mini malt loaves, salted crisps and gluten free bars. On lap 2 of the marathon there will also be flat coke available in cups.

Results & Prizes

Provisional results will be posted to our website at approximately 6pm. Prize winners will be contacted towards the end of the week following the race by email.

This event is not suitable for canicross.

Course Details

5km & 10km

The Bath Run Festival 10km follows the Skyline 10km route, but hopefully with much less mud! It is a two lap course which stays on the hill tops, offering great views of Bath from the iconic Sham Castle, as well as over to Little Solsbury Hill and Bannerdown Hill, where the other races will head. There is a great mix of terrain; open meadows, single-track way and winding forest trails. The course is rolling, with a few hills, but nothing too extreme.

Very Long Half Marathon

The route has 3 significant hills where the bulk of the 1,215ft of climbing will take place. The first 6km are very nice and relaxed. The half marathon route will leave the 10km course after 1.25km and head down North Road. Runners will turn off and go down Sham Castle Lane to pick up the Kennet and Avon Canal in Sydney Gardens. The route then heads along the Canal to Bathampton and goes over the Toll Bridge before looping round underneath it. The course now follows the side of the River Avon as it heads to Bath Easton where the first big climb awaits.

The original Roman Fosse Way heads straight up the hill and this is of course the route we will take :-) The gradient is pretty consistent as the terrain transitions from residential to woodland. The run then heads down into St Catherine's Valley, joins some country lanes for a short distance, before tackling the steepest climb on the couse at 10.5km. Some long awaited flat running is ahead along the Charmy Down ridge, then there is a little descent and climb up to Little Solsbury Hill at 13km.

From the top of Little Solbsbury hill, the route rejoins the river Avon in Bath Easton and retraces it's steps back over the Toll Bridge, along the canal and back up North Road towards Sham Castle and round the lake to the finish. The race is just shy of 26km long!

Marathon

The marathon is (almost) two laps of the Half Marathon, but we thought we would spare you doing the climb up to Sham Castle for a second time. The course description is as above for the Half Marathon route.

The course has a total of 2,135 ft of climbing, but there are really only 5 hills (and maybe a couple of little ones!)

Amazing. Bath running festival was the toughest marathon and challenge I’ve done. It was picturesque, challenging, rewarding. The marshals were just fantastic! They really got me round and through. Fabulous but not for the faint hearted.
