What is an Olympic-distance triathlon, and why is it also called standard distance?
What is an Olympic-distance triathlon, and why is it also called standard distance?
An Olympic-distance triathlon consists of a 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run. “Standard distance” is another name for the same format, so you may see either term on listings pages. Compared to a sprint triathlon, the swim and bike segments are typically twice as long in Olympic-distance events, with the run increasing from 5K to 10K. The word “Olympic” describes the distance used at the Games; don't worry, you don’t need to meet an elite standard to enter an ordinary age-group event.
Is three hours a good finish time for an Olympic-distance triathlon?
Is three hours a good finish time for an Olympic-distance triathlon?
Three hours is a respectable Olympic-distance result, especially if it’s your first attempt. The clock includes both transitions, so the time spent removing your wetsuit or collecting your bike counts toward your overall time. A difficult bike route could move you beyond three hours even when you’re racing well. The swim venue makes a difference, too, so compare your finish to results from that event rather than using three hours as a pass-or-fail mark.
Do I need a time-trial bike for an Olympic-distance triathlon?
Do I need a time-trial bike for an Olympic-distance triathlon?
You don’t need a time-trial bike to complete an Olympic-distance triathlon. A road bike is a solid option, and some events may also accept hybrids if they’re safe and meet the organiser’s rules. An expensive aerodynamic setup won’t make up for a bike that’s uncomfortable or unfamiliar. It’s a good idea to use something you’ve trained on, then check the event guidance for any restrictions covering handlebars or other equipment.
Should I complete the full Olympic distance in training before race day?
Should I complete the full Olympic distance in training before race day?
You don’t need to complete the whole Olympic-distance race in one training session. It’s more usual to become comfortable with each leg separately, then practise joining the bike and run together. These shorter combination sessions let you experience changes in your legs without causing excessive fatigue that might affect you on race day.
What are T1 and T2 in an Olympic-distance triathlon?
What are T1 and T2 in an Olympic-distance triathlon?
T1 and T2 are the two timed transitions within an Olympic-distance triathlon, and both count towards your overall finish time. T1 comes after the 1,500m swim, when you remove your wetsuit and get ready for the 40km bike leg. T2 begins once you’ve finished cycling and racked your bike, then ends as you head out on the 10K run. They may only take a few minutes, but smooth transitions can make a big difference to your three-hour target time.
