South Milton Sands, Thurlestone, Kingsbridge, Devon TQ7 3JY

Sat 8th June 2019

Starting at 16:00

Organiser's Description

It’s time to shiver with perspiration. The road is long, so let’s run it Janet….The Rocky Horror Trails are part of the Rock Sea Watersports Weekend at the National Trust's South Milton Sands in South Devon. They include a 10k and half marathon for those who like their trails to be a bit... edgy.

Fully marked routes follow the South West Coast Path, starting and finishing at South Milton Sands beach. The routes take in the loveliest parts of the South West Coast Path, from South Milton Sands to Hope Cove (10k) and Salcombe’s South Sands (half marathon). And yes we welcome fancy dress!

How To Get There

By road: South Milton Sands is 4 miles outside Kingsbridge, a market town and tourist hub on the A381, which runs from Totnes. From Kingsbridge follow the A381 South towards Salcombe. Turn right to South Milton village, then turn left (signposted) to the beach. The approach road to the beach is a narrow lane with limited passing places. At peak times it can be heavily congested so we suggest visitors arrive early, and consider departing via the village of South Huish.

By bus: Buses to South Milton and Thurlestone run from Kingsbridge. The 606 TALLY HO! service runs from Kingsbridge on the hour, taking around 6 minutes and dropping passengers 1 mile outside of South Milton.

By train: The closest stations are Ivybridge 14 miles away, and Totnes 17 miles away. The stations are served by Great Western Railway, with main line services from London Paddington to Plymouth and Penzance, and by Cross Country, with trains from Penzance through to Bristol Temple Meads and Birmingham New Street to Manchester, the North and North East of England (Leeds and Newcastle) and Scotland (Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen).

On foot: South Milton Sands can be reached by following the South West Coast Path East from Plymouth.

Course Details

The Half Marathon starts and ends at South Milton Sands and visits Hope Cove and Salcombe’s South Sands via the South West Coastpath, cutting back via East Soar on the return.

South Milton Sands is a long sweep of golden sand and rockpools, which edges a sheltered bay of crystal clear waters and looks out over the iconic Thurlestone Rock archway. The beach is a great spot for watching sunsets, or sitting at the beach café and watching the birds and wildlife over the wetlands.
